After saying several times how happy I am with my car, which I bought in July, there now might be something lurking.
From cold, idling sounds like it always has.
But, when warm, there also seems to be a low-pitched growling noise on top of the normal sound.
It's as if when cold I'm listening to an orchestra playing but when hot there are extra double-basses as well.
Any ideas?
Just thinking again, next time I hear this I'll try to see any difference with clutch in / clutch out. Should have thought of this before writing...........

I think mine does this too.... sounds like a light knocking sound when idling with the engine warm? No idea what it is, but it's done it since I got it (44k miles) and it's not got any worse, nor does it do it all the time - I have a feeling it happens more when there is more load on the alternator (eg cold dark wet days) - it could be the crank pulley I suppose, but there's no rattling when cold, so who knows

2.0Hdis can have problems with the bottom pulley on the cambelt. Is this where the sound if coming from or is it the engien itself?

It could be the crank pulley, but these normally rattle from cold, which mine doesn't, and there's no evidence of failure (eg rust / dust on the pulley face which you normally get). I can't put my finger on the noise, and you can't really hear it outside the car / under the bonnet - but it is there enough to make you notice it. Sometimes!
