xantia sd turbo boost.

Post by rbramm »

does anyone out there know if it is feasible to raise the pressure from 0.6bar to 1bar on the sd engine to give the same output of the td. if it is possible how would i go about it and what changes / adjustments would i need to do.

all help appreciated.
xantia sd still kicking.

I wasn't aware that there was any difference between the engines, is it that one has a top intercooler and the other at the front? Assuming this is a 1.9 td I thought they were all about 90 bhp. If one doesn't have a turbo, how are you going to raise the pressure?

Peter, weren't the SD's introduced because the original XUD9 engines couldn't handle full-blow turbo's originally with many wrecking the block (was it the cranks?) thus resulting in a beefed up XUD9T?

If so, rbram, then I wouldn't advise trying to squeeze more power out of it for this very reason.

the sd is quite a rare beast now. has 75bhp with a light pressure turbo. engine model code is dhw i think.

by the sound of the last entry it is not able to take the full blow of the td turbo. shame dont want more speed just more pull.

thanks for the replies guys.

much appreciated.

What years were the SDs available?

I passed a S2 today which said SD on the side trims. Another odd thing was it was the very base spec, a S2 with grey bumpers and not coloured as usual.

you are right there most of them are very basic spec. manual windows no central locking etc. mine is a 97 model. think they were only built for a couple of years.

they came as two models base spec like mine and lx spec.

parkers lists the sd basic from 96 to 97 only. dont know about the lx

the lx is as it sounds like the lx td but with low pressure turbo.

Pardon my ignorance  I have not come across this engine. So the answer must be that its feasable to do it but you risk wrecking the engine

The SD was a replacement for the 1.9D as the 1.9D wouldn't meet the euro III (?) emissions specs. I believe it's low boost with no IC, but I don't know about the internals - the 1.9TD is uprated internally with different rods, and oil sprays to the undersides of the pistons. I don't whether the SD uses the 1.9D internals or 1.9TD. Either way, it's not worth the hassle given the low price of 1.9TD Xantias! God only knows what the rationale for either the 1.9D or the SD Xantia was!!??

Thanks for the info. They did a non turbo 2.1 XM but not in the UK, and that was a slightly bigger engine though. I would imagine that they went quite well as the turbo one pulls well before the boost comes up.

As richard says, Its a Turbo, but no intercooler, you get the air cleaner pipes across the back of the engine to the turbo AS Per XUD Td, but the turbo out pipe come out to the top then CURVES round straight into the inlet manifold, which is the SAME as the TD intercooled engine.. Yes it replaced the 1.9d engine, but I would be sure you could EASYILLY put the intercooler onto the engine with easy and increase the density and power. I would DOUBT very much in this case there would be much difference in the internals, wouldn't that cost too much with the HDi on the horizon?

Just my though

XUD9T was out for years before the low blow version came in, so it wont of been a strength issue. I should imagine it is just a detuned 1.9 TD, less boost and no intercooler. Most were autos too.

Ah right, that clears that up then. Though this one i saw must have been more recent than 97, as it was a series two car. Cant remember what reg it was though.

There is usually quite a good selection of TD cars on ebay for decent prices.

Xms are great, if your wanting economy then the 2.1TD manual is probably the best model to go for, has plenty of pull too.
