Steering Rack Gaitor...

Post by citroenxm »

Hi All..

Ive a car in for MOT pre check, and she needs a PASSENGER SIDE rack gaitor..

Car: Xantia 2.o HDi 110bhp.. 1999 W.

Yes, thats the one, the Passenger side, the one with the RAM in the way!

I can see that the Ram needs to come away, but what about the attaching point for rhe RAM, does it screw off with the track rod end attached??

Cheers
Paul

The official method is remove the rack, dismantle it, fit the boot first, rebuild the rack and refit it

Meanwhile, back in the real world.... Get a stretch boot from the factors, remove the ram mounting bolt, which leaves the stud behind, then stretch the boot over the stud, various methods have been advocated for getting it over, including using the back of a spoon to protect boot.

as Richard says,

make sure you get a rubber boot not the OE thermo plastic one, as this one dont stretch,

also make very sure you fit it the right way round the first time, as each of the ends are very slightly smaller than each other, if you fit the wrong way you will have one heck of a job to secure the inner rack end,

i know i have bin there and worn the T shirt, even tried removeing the rubber spacer/fillit collar in the end of the rack body, still did not like staying in place,

Paul , years ago when I did a passenger 605 gaitor, the method was to cut the ram stud down to size , it was much longer than needed and prevented even a stretch gaitor going over.. I think I cut it and added the nut back on to give a rounded surface.. Xantia may be different, aint done one :D

Well, this turned out not as bad as expected..

I tried the real world way, but there was no way enough room, then to top it off, it remove the ram, needed two supply pipe undooing, which I had NOT enough space to swing on a spanner to undo them..

SO Rack out! which was not as bad as expected.. I dropped the subframe on the drivers side, removed the 3 frame bolts, and slackened the passenger ones, but left them in place, lowered the frame and hey presto! pleanty of room to remove the rack with pinion valve in place!!

So, rack on floor, unscrewed the INNER track rod joint OFF the rack, got the ram off, and the rest was refitting is the reversal of removal!

Pictures to follow tonight after another busy day..

Cheers for advice guys..
