Windscreen / headlamp washer bottle & pumps ?
Anyone had this lot out ? The paynes manual says the front bumper needs to come off , I had a quick look today and was hoping it would come out with just the front offside wheel off ? My headlamp washers don't work and I want them to !! I'm thinking it's the pump.

If you can wait til tomorrow evening, I'll have a look at the exposed one on the LX (it's sans bumper) and see how it's fixed, I'm pretty sure you'll have to remove the bumper.
Removing the bumper from a MK1 can be a pain, as the bolts rust solid in the captive nuts in the plastic bracket of the bumper, so when you try to remove the bolts, they just spin.
The bracket that holds the nuts is held onto the bumper by rubber gromets, I believe it's designed to pop the bumper off in a prang rather than the bolts bending their mounts behind the wing. That's the theory and when the car was only a few years old, I'm sure it would have worked, but after 10 years, the rubber has gone solid so rather than pop off, the bracket stays with the bumper in a prang, and pulls it's mount with it.
What I had to do when I replaced Cassy's bumper was pry the bumper off the captive nuts, then clamp the nuts with grips so you can extract the bolts.
Then superglue some washers to new bolts, feed them through the holes where the captive nuts used to be, from inside the bumper.
Use something like epoxy so you can coat the face of the washer to glue it to the inside of the bracket.
I'll take a load of photos tomorrow evening.

First of all check the relay before pulling the car apart, its the large pink one located within the relay box behind the battery on a S2 (on a S1 its behind the O/S/F wheel within a large box in the wheelarch itself) they are the usual cause of non working headlight washers.
BTW you can access the washer bottle via the O/S/F wheel arch, but if you want to completely remove the bottle IIRC you will need to release the O/S of the bumper, the bottle is retained by two bolts onto the inner wing.

No, NOT necessarily. (There must be a warning in the first page of Haynes: "Don't do everything in the same way as told in this book . There are better ways! ".)HDI wrote:The Haynes manual says the front bumper needs to come off ,
Ask first in FCF .
From wheel side the bottle can be completely taken off. Also right side headlight off which will help you fit back the filler hose and the breather hose. Washer bottle retaining screws (2 times 10mm) will be exposed behind inner wheel arch. They were very rusted and I had to replace them after first removal. 3 electric connectors, from lowest to highest -> windscreen motor, level sensor and headlamps washer motor.HDI wrote:I had a quick look today and was hoping it would come out with just the front offside wheel off ?
It might be also corrosion, relay or fuse (relay is both for fog lights & headlamps washer pump). Fuse is easiest to check. Relay is PINK colored (Cartier text on it) and in engine room fuse box.HDI wrote:My headlamp washers don't work and I want them to !! I'm thinking it's the pump.
Edit:
- Fuse location is in the engine room fuse box. Check fuse number from layout in owner's manual.
- Relay location is USUALLY in the engine room fuse box BUT mine was in a L-shaped box behind the left wheel arch fantastic!
Good luck,

Enjoy the outstanding design of the washer bottle
PS: Pls correct above text: (relay is both for fog lights & headlamps washer pump)
as --> (fuse is both for fog lights & headlamps washer pump)

Thanks for the replies guys
Have checked the fuse and relay , my mantra is simplest things first !
Have been through the bumper removal pain on a Xantia 1 which is why I'm less than keen to remove it to do this job ! The only thing worse than that is a clutch cable or clutch pedal clip on a Xantia 1 , that is a real witches sister to do !!
One thing I did notice during my initial reccy was how the offside rad hose was routed through the washer bottle to presumably prevent icing in winter !

I can confirm this for you as I have recently replaced the motor myself... on the S2 Exclusive I found only one motor which runs the windshield washers, headlight washers and rear screen washer... It is perfectly possible to replace this unit by just removing the underwing splash guard (and wheel if more access is required), in fact I believe it would be possible to do the job from underneath without removing anything at all..

I haven't heard/knew this before. Any pictures? would be nice to learn new things Are there 3 different pipes?f00lzz wrote:... on the S2 Exclusive I found only one motor which runs the winshield washers, headlight washers and rear screen washer...
This is a 2 directional washer motor for windscreen and tailgate in my Xantia.
It can easily be reached from below, even without removing anything.
Again in mine (MK2) there is a much bigger (2-3 times in size) motor for headlight washers. That gives a "jet powered" stream of water to the headlights. It has only 1 pipe. I'll come back with a piccy

You reckon there is only 1 motor for everything ??!! The windscreen washers work ok , why would the headlamp washers not work in that case ?
I have a 2 post lift so I can work from the underside too.

I know that the motor works 'in reverse' for the rear screen washer and their must be some sort of one way valve involved... I was 'lucky' in that the motor eventually stopped altogether so a direct replacement is all I needed. I also found that some of the small bore piping was blocked/damaged and managed to snip the bad ends off and everything worked!

Here is a picture where 2 separate motors and level sensor are seen.VertVega wrote:Any pictures? would be nice to learn new things Are there 3 different pipes?f00lzz wrote:... on the S2 Exclusive I found only one motor which runs the winshield washers, headlight washers and rear screen washer...

I think VV is right , I could see a much larger pump with a large bore hose connected to it. That is on top of the tank so it will have to come out.

Well, well you wouldn't have recognized it if I've added the piccy taken right after it was taken off . It was covered with mud, dirt and ... (you name it) all over!HDI wrote:The tank on mine is not quite as clean as yours though !
