C5-II gear noise

Post by mark_l »

Hi!
There is AL4 (HP16) gearbox on my car.
In "drive" or "reverse" positions it makes nose like sough-whistle or something like this (oh, my English! )
In "neutral" or "parking" position-nothing.
Is it OK or something wrong?
Thanks
Mark

That sounds bad Mark.
A whistle from the gearbox could be a blocked oil filter. Get the oil in the gearbox changed straight away.
What miles or kilometers has your car done?

The AL4 and 4HP16 are two different gearboxes. From what I can see they both are similar.
The AL4 and the 4HP16 use the same type of oil Esso LT71141, you can get this from your Citroen dealer. Do NOT use any other oil.

Here is a manual for the AL4

Here is a manual for the 4HP16.

Sorry they are both in English.

I hope this helps.

*edit more information on AL4 oil change in this thread.

Well, now that is interesting. The 4HP16 is a baby version of the 4HP20 used in the V6. It is identical in all mechanical respects but smaller so if this is the one firtted to your C5 Mark, all remarks made in this forum to the 4HP20 apply.

You may like to read this thread to see what goes wrong with them!

Is the noise there in all forward gears and does it change with road speed or engine speed. Is it present at all times?

The reason I as is that the differential and intermediate gear can make a little noiuse on a high mileage 'box and is nothing to worry about.

Do as Sid says and get the oil changed as soon as possible. That IS important.

Thank you guys!
It is 44 KKm on the clock. Not a lot, I think.
The noise is weak-it's impossible to hear it from inside of the car, even when it stays. I hear it in the closed parking with open windows. So I can not answer your questions about it's "behavour", sorry!
What I do can say-the gear changing is enough silent and smooth.
Thanks again for your answers and links-they are very useful for me. :D

Do you hear the noise only when moving or is the noise present when the gear is in D or R but not moving Mark?

Jim, I hear it when the gear is in D or R but not moving.
When the gear is in N or P-the noise disappears.
I don't hear it when moving-it is too weak or not present :?:
