A quick 'is it worth it' question

Post by Toby_HDi »

Now, I'm on the look out for another car. I want a 406 Coupe but I am very selective about what I want and so it seems cars are not forthcoming.

Now I get a nice bonus come March which could be used to purchase said 406 but I need a car until then.

I've spotted locally a XM. It appears to be the 2.0 TCT model and is a 1993 (though appears to be on a private plate. Details are sketchy as yet as it is on side of road and I haven't enquired. It's up for £495 ono and I was wondering if it's worth taking a punt on it.

Thanks
Toby

If you love the Xantia the Xm is bigger in size and personality and in fact
you may find the Xantia a bit dull afterwards.

OK, I'm totally biased (obviously) but the one single Xm that does everything
for me all of the time is my 2.0i TCT - only caveat is whether the car you're
watching is an auto as that would take the edge off the appeal and add an
element of doubt over the 'box longevity.

Really the best era of Xm to get is '93/94 as it's regarded by us Xm addicts as
the best series 1 with that interior/dash and the nicer (very subjective) looks.
Only thing would be a retrofit of an earlier single spoke steeringwheel.

The seller may bite your hand off for £400 as most folk will be sh!tscared of it!
Yes, GO FOR IT!

Real champagne motoring for lager money! Can you walk away and ignore it?

Nice looking cars the 406 coupe, some real bargains to be had!

The Xm sounds ok, price largely depends on if its taxed and tested? £500 for a car isnt much, however you need to make sure its in good running order or it may cost you a small fortune to get it put right.

There is usually a good selection of Xms around for sale lately, take a look on ebay and car and classic, though i doubt you will find one cheaper, if it is id seriously question its usability.

Yes there are some decent priced 406 Coupes. But, I want a D9 not a D8 and needs to be manual.

As I say details for the XM are sketchy, I may phone up in a bit and ask a few questions. The sign in the car did say 12 months MOT though.

Other than that a trip to Glasgow may be in order for a V6 Xantia

Yes, V6 Xantia every time! Not that I'm in any way biased of course...

Also Toby, amazing as it is, the V6 is likely to be more economical than the 2.0 TCT XM if my Activa experiences are anything to go by...

Yes i would think so, ive just said on the other tread, the V6 seems to do similar MPG to our 2.016v auto Xm, so the TCT will be more juicy :)

Im secretly fancying a Xantia at the moment, wouldnt be a V6 though! Would need to be a diesel for my daily

My vote would be for the V6 Xantia - I'm somewhat tempted by it anyway.
You will likely discover that a 406 is no longer of interest after the V6.
