2.0HDi coolent temperature too high warning, any ideas?

Unread post by Citroenmad »

It started a few months ago when my 206 2.0HDi 90 put up a warning sign that its coolect temperature was too high, it said stop on the dash and made a beep. It only stayed on for a couple of seconds so i didnt stop and carried on.

Since then its been getting a bit more fequent but yesterday driving to work it put the warning up on the centre screen and said stop, the coollent temperature gauge shot up to full and it started beeping. Now i didnt stop as id only been driving for about 2 minutes so the engine was still warming up.

After a minute or so the gauge needle went back to normal running temperature. However at every junction the car was reving on its own to slightly above 1200rpm, it normally sits just below 1000.

On the way home the temperature gauge was going from 70-90 most of the time and reving occasionally at junctions.

Its still driving ok, apart from the extra revs, the coolent is fine and it was recently serviced too. Although it is using a bit more fuel at the moment.

I use this car for doing 65-80 miles most week days, so im slightly concerned about it, but the garage i use is closed for the next week so i cant book it in to get checked until then.

Currently using the 2.1 Xm (real hardship!) as i dont want to risk the Peugeot doing something odd and letting me down.

I asume it could be a temperature sensor problem somewhere

Any one any ideas, or have had this with their 2.0HDi?

Thanks, Chris.

Hi,

Had a similar problem on a C5 2.2 HDi.

It was caused by a faulty engine temp sensor.

Fault came up for a few seconds shortly after starting from cold (not after a warm start).

Think it was due to a circuit break in the thermister that opened up as it heated up and then closed again.

Anyway new temp sensor cured it.

It is located on the passenger side of the engine towards the rear.

Held in by a clip. Has a rubber seal.

You will need to drop the coolant level or get leakage. If you drop level by letting coolant out of one of the hoses at the bottom of the radiator you can catch it in a container and reuse it.

If you need fresh AF don't forget to use citroen AF when you top up to preserve anti corrosion properties of coolant.

Daughter 2 had this problem on the Xsara. The stop light came on, the temperature gauge shot up then went to nil and made the beep sound. I replaced the sender in the end of the block and that cured it. Cost around 8 quid.

Thanks very much, thats most helpful :)

I had thought that and i got a sensor from Peugeot today for around £11. I wasnt sure if this is the right one as i wasnt sure which sensor was failing, but i got it anyway.

Its the temperature sensor and it does appear to be where you both describe. So ill have a go at fitting that tomorrow and see how it goes.

Thanks, Chris

I replaced the temperature sensor the other day. Its been fine since then, so hopefully thats that. The old one was quite tired looking, certainly in need of replacement.

Nice simple for for about £13 with the new rubber seal.

I recently came across a Xsara HDi 90 which had a similar problem, using my Lexia I managed to tack it down to a break in the wiring close to where the loom attaches to the temperature sender due to the sharp turn the wiring takes.
