C5 Gearbox Identification

Post by minibusman »

Hi All,

Having decided that I must replace the gearbox on my C5 2.2 I now face the dilema of working out which version it is. I know it's a 5 speed manual, but how do I find out which model? Does it matter? Are they interchangeable?

Thanks in advance

In the Citroen Service docs there are 3 manual gearboxes listed for the MK1 2.2 HDi. An ML5T, ML5C and ML6 CL.

Each box will have a label on it which can be used to identify which one it is.

You'll have to look for the label to find out.

ML5T has label LE96 (Part no. 2222 K2) or LEJ6 (Part no. 2223 FE)

ML5C has label LM17 (Part no. 2222 FA) or LMA7 (Part no. 2223 LR)

ML6 CL has label MB04 (Part No. 2222 HS) or MBK4 (Part No. 2223 PL)

You may be able to tell by the gear stick. The ML5C box has a third cable for selection of reverse gear. You lift a collar on the gear stick to go into reverse.

The ML5T and ML6 CL don't have the third cable and, as far as I can see, don't have a collar on the gearstick which has to be lifted to select reverse.
Cheers, Kev

Hi Kev,

That's brilliant. Thanks very much.
Mine has a collar so must be ML5C.
Do you know if the 2 versions are interchangeable, or must I replace with one with same label?
Thanks

Would I be right in simplifying it even more?

The ML5T has reverse gear opposite 5th gear.
The ML5C has reverse gear on the same side and further over than 1st/2nd gear.
The ML6C has 6 speeds.

That sounds good to me Paul :D

I don't know what the difference is between the two ML5C boxes.

It may be an age (RP number) thing. The label would be the best confirmation.

That's 100pc confirmation it's a ML5C.
I'd better find the label just in case the 2 versions are fitted differently.
Thanks a lot both.
