Thanks for posting this! All V6s must be saved.... Just a shame it's not a MK1..
Worrying though.
A whirring/squeaking noise from any area on a V6 is worrying. Buy but budget for a new cambelt, tensioners and waterpump. Not cheap but worth it. If it has no history of a cambelt change it's definitely on borrowed time.
V6s run warm but don't overheat on short trips. Rad?
The other faults are minor and easily sorted.
Now if that whirring noise is actually coming from the gearbox, it's rebuild time...
147K and the gearbox is approaching borrowed time and should be overhauled at this mileage if only to change the oil filter and give it a good clean-up and inspection.
As he says in the ad, a great car for an enthusiast. Kev, one for you!!!!

And what's wrong with mk2's?????? I'll have you know mine has just done 500 miles virtually non stop without even breaking a sweat! And I feel none the worse for it either. Fantastic long distance cruisers.CitroJim wrote:Thanks for posting this! All V6s must be saved.... Just a shame it's not a MK1..

Actually, something did go wrong, a dash lamp blew
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Not as good looking, horrible headlights, rear heater button in a bizarre place, steering wheel radio controls that are too easy to hit by mistake...Stempy wrote: And what's wrong with mk2's??????

Horrible Headlights Xac!
S2 I think is better looking, MUCH better headlights, but I do agree with the heated rear screen button, but no problem with the steering radio controls...
However, I must say the S1 headlights on the V6 are much better then the S1 Diesel headlights...

I think they changed them on the S1 in either 96 or 97.
My first Xantia's headlights were good, but had to be kept spotless or else the light levels would drop, but like Cassy and Jenny, they're flood lights, giving excellent coverage.
On the S2, there's all these lines from the glass I guess, not as bad as some Vauxhall's I've driven or the bulbous Escort which when foggy showed that 50% of the light was being emitted straight up, or the Micra which lets you know the headlights are on by shining them in your face.
They're just not flood lights like the S1 are, and as such don't give as good coverage.
Added to the fact they're less useful when working in the engine bay (not enough pots along the top for nuts and bolts, they really don't impress me at all.
That and the horrible bumpers and bonnet really let Juliet down.
If she wasn't so fun to drive, and didn't have the CD player in the boot I'd never had gotten her in the first place, or would have had to replace her radio which I suppose would have solved the annoying steering wheel button problem.

Initially, I was more than tempted - it's got a sunroof too but black is
actually a hopeless colour! I know as my black Activa is invisible.
Doesn't look anything compared to Delage/Magenta/Memphis...
silver, emerald...
and running hot is the last thing you need barring slippy whining autoboxes!

The S2 looks have grown on me, its more up to date interior wise without that stupid keypad, i've never hit the steering wheel controls by mistake, that must be a personal thing and the way you hold the wheel. The S1 does not look as modern but i still love its looks, but the S2 was a step in the right direction to keep pace with the competition.

sorry, I seem to have stirred up a controversy Not intended, I personally prefer the MK1. I should have made that clear perhaps that I was stating a personal preference and was not critising the MK2 Xantia at all...
Xantia_V6, good point on the crank pulley. If the squeaking is much worse when the aircon is switched on that's almost diagnosis confirmed...

I've no complaints about the effectiveness of my S1 (late 1995) headlights - in fact, quite impressed by them, and they rarely get cleaned. The only odd thing is that whereas on the offside, the main and dip beams are coincident, on the nearside the main beam is higher and directed more towards the offside - I assume this is a design feature (or aren't the lamps original?)
Xac - you're so right about the tops of the headlights being useful storage cubby holes. What would we do without them?
Paul - are you saying that on S1, the V6 has different headlight units to those on diesel models, or on a comparison on your own vehicles?
