Which bulbs to buy for a 06 Xenon C5

Post by c5fan »

I have a 2006 facelift model C5 VTX+, the reference number on the top of the headlamp is X3 H7 H1 DTG

The car has just failed the MoT on the nearside side light and nearside headlight not working on dipped beam.

I've taken a pic - http://s680.photobucket.com/albums/vv16 ... nt=003.jpg

I am trying to buy a replacement xenon and side light but am having difficulty finding out which are the right bulbs. Nearly all on eBay are for the phase 1 01-04 C5.

I'd greatly appreciate which bulbs I need and where best to get them from

Would these bulbs fit the 06 C5?

and for the side light:

Many thanks in advance

im not sure what head lamp bulbs your car use's, but if you speak to a good motor factors and tell them your car reg, they should be able to say what bulbs it takes,

and if those cap less side lamp bulbs are just the standerd ones i think that EBAY price is extautionet, i buy those in packs of 10 and they used to work out around 18/20 pence each, i sell on to my customers at 50p each

Side light bulbs on a Mk2 C5 are different to the Mk 1. Mk2 use a staggered pin bulb and the ref number is 433C. Main dealers charge an exorbitant price but I got mine here:-
http://www.consumabulbs.com/files/bdet.php?id=170
I suppose you know, it's off with the front bumper to fit them.

PS. Since you have lamp washers on your car, you have proper xenon lights. Those bulbs on ebay are not xenon bulbs. They're only normal headlamp bulbs but filled with xenon gas. You need D1S HID Xenon bulbs. Put it into Ebay search and you'll find them at around £35 each.

I've just had a look at Consumabulb's web site. The bulbs seem to be a fair to middling price to me, certainly not cheap. Possibly a good thing for some people!

The Find-a-bulb service by car is a bit basic. For my C5 it didn't ask whether it had Xenons or not and so presented me with a bulb list for the standard car. It also failed to list the amber capless wedge bulbs, used in wing repeaters, for both the C5 and Xsara.

I needed a C5 sidelight bulb quick for the MOT. The local Cit dealer was the only place I could find one. They charged for one bulb what Consumerbulbs charged for a pair.

The sidelamp bulbs are one of fortunate differences between the Phase I and II as far as I'm concerned!

I usually buy my bulbs from motor factors and then in a packet of 10 to reduce the single price. Looking after not only my own 2 cars but also my 2 daughters' cars soon makes that a VFM decision. Aldi and Lidl have special offers on headlamp bulbs and bulb kits a couple of times a year. It's well worth keeping an eye out for them

I then keep a selection of bulbs in a box in each car.

You do keep a spare bulb box in your car, don't you?

Many thanks for all the replies, I've just bought the sidelight bulb from consumabulbs, just managed to get the order in by 3pm so hopefully they will arrive by Monday.

I've been checking out the xenon bulbs on eBay and most of them seem around the £55 mark so I might call around my local motor factors and see what they are charging.

Many thanks again for all the help, luckily the bulbs have gone on the n/side so I'm hoping removing the battery will be enough to fit them.

When I had to replace a Xenon bulb on my mk1 C5 I found they were D2R type. They come in different temperatures from 4000K to 12000K. The higher the K number the bluer the bulb, but, in the UK, 10000K and above are illegal for road use because they're extremely blue and quite dark.

I purchased 2 off D2R bulbs at 9000K from Tialand for £45. But, they were so blue that I couldn't see where I was going.

I replaced them with some bulbs at 4600K and they're nice and bright.

In D2R the R stands for Reflector. That's where the headlamp projects the light by reflecting it off the mirrored back of the unit.

The alternative is D2S where the light projection relies on a lense at the front of the unit. BMWs us D2S. Mercedes use D2R.

Looking at your picture your headlamp doesn't have a lense at the front so I think you'll need R type.

Now there are infact D1R Xenons available. I'm not sure whether you need D2R or D1R.

EDIT: I've just checked my Citroen Service manual and for the Mk2 C5 the Discharge lamp is just as JohnD says .... it's a D1S.

Mmmm.. there must be a lense infront of it then...

from my experience I would recommend nothing greater than say 6000K temperature.
Cheers, Kev

If that photo you've linked to is your headlight, you don't have HID headlights.

My C5 has the HID lights, they are of the projector type and when you look at them you can see an aspheric lens and no reflector.

The car in the picture below has HID lights.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... oen_C5.jpg

If you look closely at the outermost light, you'll see no reflector is visible.

The car in the picture linked below is the standard halogen headlight.

You can see a reflector in the outermost lights.

But surely headlamp washers weren't fitted to cars without HID lights?

And the time is now...

http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/of ... sday09.htm

and

http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages ... .index.ar7

Neither offer the Xenon bulb, understandably, but there's still main beam, which on my Phase I is halogen.

I can't say for certain whether headlight washers were fitted to or not fitted to non-HID equipped C5s, what I do know is that the HID and non-HID headlights look different and its pretty easy to tell them apart.

I could be proven wrong but from what I've seen, all facelift C5s seem to have the cut out in the bumper where the headlight washers pop out, whether they have the washers behind them is a different matter completely.
