ideal running temperature?

on a diesel xantia ...might seem a bit stupid to ask.. :oops:

Thermostats are normally around 90C

I think an idicated 90 deg is too hot - Im comfortable with the guage showing 75 - 80 deg - If head gasket is good and clear, it will give pleanty good enough heating, and leaves pleanty of room for warming up when stuck in traffic..

Diesel's usually get upto about 80' on the dash and should only get to 90 when working hard or in traffic. Saying this my Activa gets upto 90' quickly but the oil takes ages to get anywhere near this. Oil is a better reflection of the overall engine heat in my experience.

If its getting to 90' you need to flush your coolant system out :-)

The original thermostat in my 1.9TD Xantia had 83 degrees stamped on it, and in normal running the gauge hovered at 80. If the temperature climbed to 90 on the gauge, then the fans would cut in.

New thermostat recently fitted, and temperature hovers on bottom of the 80 mark on the gauge. So situation normal :)

Oil is always slower to warm through. My V6 water gets to 85 - 90 but the oil still shows cold - untill a good 15 miles after then it starts to rise...

It's my understanding that an OEM thermostat is specified to more or less the preferred running temperature.

Shooting the temps with a pyrometer in various places, is a good way to feel how it's behaving - check the head near thermostat housing, the block on opposite side, upper radiator hose. I would trust the gauge on the dash for anything other than a general indication.
