JACKING

Unread post by CITMAN »

I have a 1994/95 Citroen ZX 1.4i. And I have a problem which is the following: -
Where do I place my hydraulic jack to raise the front of the car. And where do I place the axle stands (sill jacking points maybe).
Also the same question above but raising the back of the car and where do I place the axle stands.

Use a trolly jack at the centre of rearmost crossmember on the front subframe, this is the one where the subframe bolts to the body, place axle stands on the same part of the frame near the body mounting bolts, use a sturdy piece of timber about 3x2x8 to spread the load on the crossmember while jacking, I also use some 1" plywood in 2.5" strips for sitting on the axle stands.
Place the trolley jack in the centre of the rear axle cross tube and the stands at either end of the tube, do not use timber on this tube as it is round and WILL be unsafe, plus it is a very strong piece of steel and does'nt need to be pampered like the front subframe.

Dave, assuming this is the same for the Xsara, I will have a go at it and let you know what happens. Hopefully I will be able to give you a photo for you to check.
Is the "rear axle cross tube" where the torsion bar is? Any description as to what the crossmember looks like? Or is it completely obvious when I get under the car? Just want to make sure beforehand because I can't see how I can get the jack to the centre of the crossmember and still be able to reach the handle. Anyway I will get back to you later today with my results.
Thanks for the help

Sorry I assumed you would be using a trolley jack, with a bottle jack you will probably have to lift each side in turn if you want both front wheels up at the same time, I wouldn't fancy using one that far under a car.
The rear suspension arms pivot inside the cross tube if that makes it more identifiable to you, and yes it has a torsion bar both in front and behind it.
