saxo 2003 driveshaft replacement

can anyone help,I replaced the drive shaft on the nearside, I have a couple of questions
1/A friend told me there should be a circlip 0n it to hold it into the gearbox, the one I toook out did not appear to have one or the one I fitted, also the haynes I have (for AX) also does not mention any circlip, is he correct should there of been a circlip fitted?

2/I lost quite a bit of oil, Ihave found were to fill it again at the top of the gearbox there is a plastice filler plug but how do you know were to fill it up to I assume you dont fill it to the top?
