C5 - Power steering

Post by tictac77 »

Today my loveable car developed a new problem (one of many since purchasing the car a couple of months ago) . A sort of growling/ tapping noise started which seems to be coming from the engine area. It hasn't hindered the power output but is quite a noticeable noise and now the powersteering does not seem to be working properly.

Any ideas??
I have a C5 2.2HDI 2001 model if that helps

It sounds like the power steering pump groaning because it's low on oil.

I don't know where the pump reservoir is on the 2.2 - check your drivers' handbook for its location.

Thanks for the response,

That's what I thought it may be but when I checked the power steering fluid reservoir and took the top off, the fluid is right up near the lid so it doesn't seem to be short of fluid?

I was wrong there was fluid in the power steering reservoir but below the min line, I have topped it off now but the tapping noise is still there, does this mean i should just give it time to run through or is there another related problem?

I would certainly give it a couple of days to get any air bubbles out. Then see (or rather hear) what happens.

Given the flow rate through the steering system I would'nt expect it to hold air for more than a minute or two of driving.

In what way is the power steering not working correctly?

Q for the gallery does the 2.2 have one of those rubberised crank pulleys?

Whatever would suggest careful check of belts.

Turn the steering lock to lock a few times to bleed it.
As cachaciero says, check the belts and pulleys carefully.
