Using old speakers from a Xantia

Post by Xaccers »

As I'm breaking the LX, and Xantias have such good speakers, I was thinking about stripping them out and putting them in boxes to use as a surround sound system.
Never done something like that before, so has anyone got any advice?
Just found something about crossovers...

At the moment I'm using my Soundblaster quadraphonic speakers through my old Pioneer system for watching DVDs and the media laptop under the telly.
They're OK but aren't big enough to have much range.
Adjusting equalizer on the Pioneer seems to give either a flat output or background music out performing any speech.

Good speakers in the Xantia? Mine are some Italian thingies, and sound quite "farty".

The only decent speakers were fitted in the VSX/Exclusive/activa models
and are genuinely uprated with their wattage compared to the ones likely
found on the LX.

Well, that's what I found by fitting VSX one's in my SX anyhow!!

Listening to a movie from my laptop blue toothed to the head unit in Cassy gives great sound :)
I've always been impressed with the speakers in the Mk1's, they can go louder than is comfortable before distorting, give plenty of clarity when there's motorway noise in the background.

Speakers of this type are designed to be run 'open baffle', and don't usually work very well in cabinets. If you want to try them in the house, they'd be best mounted on baffles as large as you can get away with, spaced well away from walls.

Xac if you really must get new speakers it's well worth shelling out some good money for. I have a Sony STR DG820 amp with an onkyo 5.1 surround system. I have only have the front sets plugged in at the minute as not got the time to sort out some neat cabling for the rears but they were well worth the £150 for the set and the sub helps a great deal in movies as speakers this size could no way kick out the low down punch this does. Also by having the sub right up against the wall means i can have the volume on it quite low and still getting the same affect. its better if you have your setup in a corner though as you can then hide the sub behind the tv set and get even more effect out of it.

It's a 1987/8 Panasonic hifi system, it just has surround.
Parents used to have good speakers for it but over the years they've sold/chucked/lost them.

Eventually I'll have Danielle's proper sound system over here (no, that's not the only reason why I like her, she's got a 42" TV and bluray too ;) )

I'd wait it out or find a costmetically damaged speaker and amp set as well worth the money :-)

Got the larger 2 of the 4 speakers wired up now and it's a vast improvement!
Not built a box or anything, just used the magnets to stick them to the front of the multi shelf stand.
Now just need to set up the rear.

It's great, I can actually hear talking when there's background music! :D

I like this concept and it's good recycling !!
My Mum recently changed her TV to an LG flat screen LCD and I had the task of disposing of the humungous old 32" Toshiba CRT set. This was a mega top of the range set when new and had surround and sub etc. Being a junkologist I couldn't resist having a peek inside for any useful salvage , so out came the 6" sub woofer !! Thats now in a box and is the sub in the sound sys for my computer , sounds good too !!
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(
My past Citroens :-
'00 Xantia SX HDI, now dead due to accident :(
'99 Xantia HDI 110 Exclusive, RIP :(
'97 Xantia TD SX
'96 Xantia TD LX
'96 ZX TD
'89 BX TD
'88 AX GT
'79 CX2400 Pallas (scrapped :( )
& a couple of Peugeots !
