Information Request

Sorry about the post in this section but I need to find out some information for someone, and I could do with the information quickly hence placing the request/post here. Note before typing this I searched around using the search function and could not find the answer.

So now to the problem.

What sort of a job is it to replace the O/S/R wheel bearing on a 2001 Peugeot 406 estate?

Is it an easy job?

Obviously there is less to contend with than compared to doing an Xantia, but what is the job really like I.E job time, and what type of bearing is fitted?

This car is not near me, it's many miles away, and the friend who owns the car is wondering what the job is like, hence my post to help out.

So can any one help me out with information, please?

not sure, but i think at some point 406's got hydraulics in the rear suspension like the xantia? but i don't think it was 4 wheel steering

well i would say a hydraulic citroen front suispension comes appart easyer than a 406/springs and shockers,

because once you have depresureised the system it all goes limp so no heavy leavering,
and why could you not say its the N/S as ui have a brand new genuine N/S/F hub with wheel bearing and lower swivel all ready to just bolt on,

it is an ABS hub so i think it will do either,

i only want 45 quid for it,

not sur about the 406 but one pug with the M16 lump and 4X4 did have a live hydraulic rear axle, i think it was the 504 though

Very easy,about an hour or so.Just done the same one on my 2003 est with abs & rear disks.
Remove wheel,undo hub nut,42/44mm i think,remove brake assy,connect hub puller,& pull out hub.
Tap new hub in(£50,ECParts with 48 tooth abs ring,early`er cars had 24 teeth i think)put brakes back on,job done.
It would have took me about an hour,as i had all the brakes & hub off within 20 mins or so,but had to replace the abs sensor too,so had to remove the back plate.
Really was that easy on mine.

Thanks for the details that PDF was useful.

I assume Peugeot used the same design on all of the 406 range.

Sounds like it's not too bad job!

Main stealer info
parts £129.85 inclusive.
1.5hrs labour £149.60 + VAT

So they won't be going to the main stealer!

I only had to do mine as the teeth were striped off on the abs pick up.I had the fault code read,& was quoted £255 to replace front driveshaft(broken teeth on abs pick up).But after some more investigation,found the rear needed doing,& then a abs sensor too.Have never done a front cv joint of hub before,but was very simple & easy
If i had taken it to the dealer,i would have got a call saying that "we`ve done the driveshaft,but the light is still on,you need a new rear hub & sensor"& about another £300
I posted it in the Peugeot forum section.But i also joined the 406 owners club forum which is great.I`ve fixed so many little problem the last few weeks through their help.
Nothing wrong with this forum,but find 406 help a bit thin on the ground after having my Xantia

Well yes there are the Pugs that are a cross breed with Citroen tech on them but, that won't be relevant to a hub strip down.

???

Also the failed bearing is a stated at the top of the thread O/S/R.

whooops i missed that, well you cant blame me for useing youy thread to plug parts i have for sale HE HE,

rears are very easy, is it disc or drums

No worries mate.

It has discs on the rear.
