90 into 110 DOES go!

Post by citroenxm »

Hi all.

The final chapter in my dreaded HDi head ache ive had in... my customer decided that a replacment engine was the way to go, after an unsuccesfull head gasket job (ONLY due to wrong thickness of gasket supplied) so another spare engine sits here (HDi 110)

Anyway - I took the plunge and I bought the HDi 90 engine from Neauneatonrob, selling off his xsara elsewere, and of course a series one car was a HDi 90 - so after a bit of digging and asking took the plunge of converting it to 110bhp.

The verdict? Easy! There was just THREE differences between the 90 and 110bhp engines, that being the turbo and inlet manifolds are different, and the Turbo DRAIN pipe into the sump is in a different place.

So after swapping manifolds, flywheels, clutches and things that mattered, IE: Water pump, new cambelt etc, on went the MLT gearbox, the 90's are BE5's, and into the car it went...

Plumb'd everything in, connected the fuel all up, and activated the lift pump about 5 times, then flicked the key and WHAM started FIRST turn, no messing!!

So, a quick blast down the road, when suddenly, back into limp mode, HOWEVER, I discovered if I switched the key off then started the car again it cleared. So tonight, Ive a local Peugeot Tech guy near me, so a quick lexia session comes up with Turbo regulator fault, it turned out to be a faulty Solinoid (HDi 110 owners, the small valves above the top engine mount, drivers side), swapped them for two others, and what a difference..

My Verdict, yes, a 90 bhp engine IS INTERNALLY and fuel system wise IDENTICAL! and it WORKS!

Good driving!

Regards
Paul

Congratulations, one happy customer I assume.

I'm sure I read somewhere (but can't find the link) that some internal engine parts such as the crankshaft have a different part number but are exactly the same dimensions. I know many people have boosted their 90's to give +20 extra HP and I have never heard of any failures, likewise with the 110 (mine is chipped and hasn't gone bang yet).

Does anyone know if there really is a difference internally in terms of the 110 engine being 'stronger' than the 90 or are they both the same?

It seems to me (I'm a computer programmer by day) that it's like computer chip manufacturers such as Intel (or AMD) who make thousands of the exact same chip but stamp different speeds on them before sending them out the door.

Yes internally, there is a difference, although they are Stroked and Bored IDENTICALLY, they do however use different crank shafts..

The 110bhp uses the XUD9Te crank, were as the 90bhp uses the XUD7te crank...

Otherwise, all same..
