If you have the inclination, you could pull out the spark plugs. The condition of your plugs will give a good clue as to whether the engine is under-or over fuelled.

The catalytic converter is mainly at risk if you have lost ignition on one or more cylinders, causing raw fuel to get to the cat. Lack of fuel is unlikely to hurt the cat at all.

thanks.....would raw fuel cause it to splutter, my sort of messed up logic (gotto rely on that as i have very little motor knowledge) thinks the spluttering is due to a lack of fuel...what causes a lack of fuel being injected?...just to add have had an existing ticking knocking from what i have been told is one of the hydrolic tappet risers...any chance there could be a link?

A faulty ignition coil could cause your spluttering and raw fuel to the calalytic converter.

I don't hink that it is likely to be connected with your existing tappet noise.

It could also be a faulty sensor (plenty to choose from).

changed the plugs and ignition coil pack....problem solved! many thanks

another minor prob...very occasionally the fan remains on when I turn off the ignition...i have to go back 10mins+ switch on ignition and this usually disengages the fan?
