Crank position sensor question

Post by c.morewood »

Will a faulty crankshaft position sensor prevent the starter motor from engaging?
Thanks,
Chris

No. The engine needs to be turned by the starter first for a signal to be
generated from the flywheel to tell the ECU what's going on and when to
intervene with fuel on a stroke. If there's no life in the starter your first
point of diagnosis would be power supply from the battery to the starter;
is there any click there at all as this would point to the starter solenoid
trying to throw the starter cog onto the flywheel. First off see if a bit of
extra power from another battery or jump leads from a running car get's
more life out of everything. It may sound basic I know but rule out the
easy stuff first!

Check to make certain there's a good earth onto the engine from the
bodywork (try a jump lead for speed) and then try turning over the
crank by hand using a decent 8 sided socket as this will show the
engine is fine and the starter isn't stuck on the flywheel.

If none of that get's you anywhere check your timing belt isn't AWOL...

Thanks Andrew,
I only asked as I have a BMW K100 which many moons ago wouldn't start in damp weather.. it took weeks to trace the fault to a cable rubbing on the radiator which would only earth in damp weather.
Now I'm having something the same with the C2. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something less obvious and easier to get at and needed to check the starting sequence/learn a bit more about this car.
I know I need to get the starter checked out.. but its right behind the engine and a b***er to get at.. only accessible/visible from below.
It starts from a bump start....runs perfectly.. and will then restart as long as the engine is warmish but if left for over 3 hours.. all the lights but no starter. And all of this started on a damp morning.

So I guess its into the garage... Thanks again for your reply,
Chris

Has a guy in the shop a short while back. He had a van which started fine one day then he did some work nowhere near the starter, and the next day the starter wouldnt engage.

He refused the believe it was the starter, however we took it next doorto the garage and hooked a jump cable to it and although it threw the gear out it was throwing it too slow indicating that the starter needed refurbing or replacing. Replacement starter cured his problem.
