I think its suppose to be there, depending on the engine or year some filters have the foam some don't.

Don't know why its required though? I would guess it adds a slight restriction to the air flow.

It's a preliminary filtering layer. This type of filter is for rough service environments and usually costs more than the type without the foam.

When there is an alternative offered, of course, as sometimes there is only one type listed. Presumably this is to ease stocking problems.

I had one of these for the V6. It would not fit the airbox properly until the layer of foam was removed.

As Xac says, these are specific to the Activa and 2.1TD.

Just the Activa and the 2.1td ??
My 1.8 has the foam thing on the filter, when I spoke to my local car parts store they listed both the filter with foam and one without, seeing as the car came with a foam add on I got a replacement with foam.
Might be the wrong filter, the car is rather sluggish, thinking about getting it a high flow filter try and get a little bit of speed.

Unless I'm mistaken I thought the filter with the foam addition was specifically for the V6.

As for " High flow" airfilters they're unlikely to make any difference to the performance of a Xantia as the standard air filter design has such a large surface area, therefore very little restriction in airflow. By comparison the air filter in SWIMB's 2500cc BMW is around a third smaller than the standard Xantia setup.
