shame: silver xantia V6 on ebay
Hi all,
I found a nice silver xant v6 on ebay going as spares and repairs, it's a lovely looking car, and looks in good nick, it is however being sold as spares and repairs though a trader.
I contacted him to know what is wrong with it and if it was still drivable, the guy came back to me with the answer that the car cannot be sold on because it was used as part of the government scrapage scheme.
I was furious, fair play to the guy for getting a grand for it, but c'mon, they aren't popular cars, and the V6 in that condition is quite rare. What a waste.
As you can all see, i'm back in the market, hopefully.

That is terribly sad
There was a list of older classic cars traded in under this scheme publioshed in Practical Classics. I don't recall all of them but it included MGBs, Midgets and the like but most remarkably, a good, tidy Riley RME.
Somebody saved it by paying the £2000 fee.
So, basically if this V6 looks worth £2000, it can be bought back.
That in itself makes a complete mockery of the scheme as the government did it to get old cars off the road in the name of "green" but they can still be bought at a price.

I found the same sad story when I contacted the guy the last time the
auction ran. The ONLY "good" to come of it is the fact a vehicle dismantler
has it for spares that could keep some more V6's and Exclusive parts going.
Hardly much of a consolation I know but at least it wasn't simply shredded
into a mess of useless "recyclable" car componentry and chugged over to
China which was my understanding of fthe reprehensible scrappage scheme.
Shame it didn't slip out of the scrap system to find another life where it is
still wanted in another place; I did this with two near mint 1973 GS 1222
saloons from a yard in France from their early 90's scrappage scheme.
I'm surprised you've managed to last this long before feeling the pull of a
Xantia v6 Deian: have you seen Nr Hallworth's nice s1 advertised on this
very forum?

Only the cars deemed "Classics" get the reprieve where a company acting
as broker offers the car on death row to the trade behind closed doors! The
car simply has a wager of £2k offered as a substitute but this has nothing
you or I or anyone else here can influence.
I get the impression this is purely a sop to prevent a serious PR disaster
and resistance from died in the wool enthusiastic car traders who know
this whole thing is pure bullshit and again something lightly garnished as
"green" as justification for something that is anything but!! Grrrrr...
Certainly too late for this silver v6 that has an MOT, mint body,
good engine box and 88k miles though.
Wonder how many Activa's have been lost to this scheme!?

One key factor largely overlooked by the press regarding the scheme
throughout the world is the fact that the new car buyers have just jumped
earlier when their car was nice'n legal and in a roadworthy state with
plenty of life left in them.
The bad times currently being experienced by the car manufacturers are
just being deferred to a later time 2 or so more years down the line - this
isn't just inventing new prospective buyers on top of the regular sales for
new cars though and the supply of second hand cars in the market will be
badly hit too for people that have no hope or desire to buy new.
The real deathtraps running around on the roads which haven't seen legality
for a good while have no chance of being offered to the scrappage system
should their driver's even have the inclination or money!
Totally f****d up thinking where something is justified by going for the
green angle as our politicians know from past experience when taking
our eyes out.

the soft spot for cits is still be there andy, it's just been awkward with money and cars and the fact my wife has just last week passed her test, so only now i may be in the market to replace a cruddy escort for something with green blood.
that v6 looks nice doesn't it!
i hope no one here has done the scrapage thing, very silly idea from the government.

Recently my brother-in-law was going on about how I should get rid of my BX (the mk1 I've got stored in a relative's barn) through the scrappage scheme . . . . I'm not a violent man in the slightest but I had to stop myself decking him!
I'm not scrapping a car I've owned since 1993 just for £2000 off the price of a poxy Yaris. If I wanted rid of it I would offer it to someone from here, or the CCC, for free rather than see it crushed for no good reason just to get a £2k bribe from the government!

I have just put on my facebook status that my car is broken, only to be given an instant reply of "oh dear!! do the scrappage thing xx "
Are people for real? Why would i want to scrap my activa to be left in debt trying to pay the rest for, as you say, a poxy yaris?
Surely the repair of my car will be cheaper than doing that?
It really annoys me, my friends with 08 reg cars think mine is old and scrap, even though they havent got air con, leather, sunroof or the huge space the xantia has and they still have 100% of the car to pay as theyve only paid the extra for the credit so far. And my car beats theirs effortlessly

There are some really nice cars being lost due to this. I heard through a garage of a very nice 2CV which had been traded in for a new C1. Had they noticed how much 2CVs actually go for the owner might have sold it on. But the garage had to send it for scrap.
Most people are seeing this opportunity to upgrade their old car for a new one, although it seems most people are buying Korean Shoeboxes and not good cars. Their shoebox will depriciate like crazy too.
I had the same thought Andrew, i would guess a lot ov very nice Xms, Activas, etc etc are being lost for the sake of this scheme.

Well if you ask me, aside from losing some very nice cars to the scrappy, it's just encouraging people to borrow money that they may not be able to pay back....and look where that got us
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

I understand most of the buyers have been elderly - who have just brought a purchase forward. We were not: our 1993 Peugeot 106 diesel is still going strong and good for another 5 years.. I don't want to pay £7k to replace it...
