xantia hdi exclusive keeps limping. help!!!
hi guys n gals can anyone help a newbie. the problem is when the engine is under load and full thottle the engine managment light will come on and drop into "limp home mode" and will not rev much over 2500 revs. if you then pull up and turn off the ignition for 1 min, then restart ,the engine will rev freely but the engine light will stay lit for a while, extinguishing when it sees fit. Todate i have changed both egr valve solenoid and turbo wastegate solenoid, booste presure sensor, checked all vacuum hoses for leeks, also presure tested intercooler and associated hoses.i had codes read by cit. pug. specialist who told me codes pionted to turbo wastgate.oh i nearly forgot i also tried blocking both vacuum pipes to and from the egr solenoid this made no diffrence . can any one sugest any further checks i could make, before attempting removeal of turbo charger etc. as this looks like a big job. many thanks for any advice as i'm running out of ideas .....1999 xantia hdi exclusive

Hi,
I've seen this problem before on my HDi when I first bought it, it used to come up with fault "52" quite regularly "turbo waste gate solanoid out of spec". I had the solenoid changed at a cost of £54 from a local independent garage, but the fault persisted, only going away after I did a full service and used some injector cleaner some shell V-power diesel/bp ultimate, and some Italian tuning, keeping the car regularly serviced in this fashion and it stayed away for 3 years
I know technically none of what I did directly relate to the issue, however as this will effect how the engine as a whole is running I guess it put less strain on something? That or it was a random electrical glitch to begin with. Might work for you.

Hi,
Unless you have the exact fault code or access to a Lexia (you could see what's going on with the live data) I'd suggest a trip to your local Bosch specialist. It sounds as if the turbo is overboosting which the ECU is detecting and putting the engine into LOS to protect it from going bang. It could be the boost solenoid that's a faulty replacement or cabling fault but without hard data it could be expensive replacing parts piecemeal.

Good luck.
Steve.

A possibility to check.
The light on my 110bhp HDI used to come on occasionally, always in hot weather and fully hot engine, and nearly always when restarting after being switched off for 10 or 20 minutes (so fully cooked up under bonnet). After running a few miles, then restarting, the light went out.
Last autumn I noticed the push on vacuum pipe for the wastegate was a very loose fit, though it had never come off by itself. After adding a small hose clip, the light has so far not come on again.
Since the boost pressure is controlled by the ECU modulating the signal to the electrovalve, a leak here could prevent the expected pressure being achieved.

thanks for the input guys. i've had this problem a while now and did a service quite recently.i'll get a few small hose clips for the vacuum pipes and try that. i'm wondering if my egr valve is coked up and not closing properly ?? does anyone know if the egr valve is open by default (as is the wastgate valve) and what psi booste i should be getting. any info/thoughts will be much appreciated.. thanks al

This is described as a manual for the motor trade, and there are some tests for checking the turbo function. I presume you would need to take a pipe to a gauge inside the car in order to check pressure under full load.

hi all, i said i'd report back if i had any joy, and i did.
i disconected the exhaust from the manifold and went for a short test drive (very loud) seemed better so i removed cat and gutted it ,replaced gutted cat and rest of exhaust and presto, its like a new car, pulls stronger and will not go into limp mode
i hope this may help anybody else with similar symptoms......
clean/replace your cat.
now to move on to my flashing air bag light, or should i start a new thread ??
