Noisy drivebelt

Post by Bren »

I had the timing / aux. belt replaced in April, along with the water pump on my Xantia TD. I have become more aware of a "rasping" sound from the pulley end of the engine which I have traced to the drivebelt / bottom pulley. If I apply some maintainence spray through the o/s plastic wheel arch liner the whole lot goes quiet for a while.

Any ideas? I am worried that something might let go - the guy who did the job is a Citroen independant who could do the job in his sleep so it's not as if I have taken it to the local cowboy.

Crank pullys in my experiance, on the older TD units dont seem to suffer any problems like the later HDi pullys doo...

Is it a Manual tensioner?? Or has the car got Air con? In which it may have the auto tensioner?? The auto tensioner spring can get weak and cause the bottom run of the belt between the crank and air con pump to make a rumbling noise.. Does the noise go away when you lift the revs up a bit?? If so, the belt is too loose, there is a manual eccentric pully you can use to tighten the belt a bit ..

The manual tensioner, may just be a dry bearing, its hard to try and understand what noise you mean..

Does your pulley look like this with an adjuster plate:

Or is it just the pulley with a hex socket and square socket on it's face?

Either way it looks like £40ish or less for the pulley, and while I've not had an engine with the pulley in the photo, I do have several with the other type and they're very easy to replace, you just unscrew it with an allen key (might take a bit of force) and screw the new one on.

Bren - my non aircon 1995 TDLX has the pulley with adapter plate as Xac's piccy. Bought from GFS last year, about £30. On fitting, with new belt. it made bit of a noise at first, and I found traces of black belt powder, suggesting it was slipping and therefore too slack. Tightened it a bit, and noise disappeared.
