Xantia starting problem

Post by yorkie »

I have a 98 xantia 1.9 td, which when starting from cold is a pig!! Turns over and over, then eventually goes, throwing white/grey smoke out!
When its warm it starts fine. Glow plugs are fairly new, just flew through an mot emissions check, so am stuck!

Thanks

Sounds like an air leak. No doubt some of the experts will comment soon, but it would help to know which injection pump is fitted (Lucas or Bosch).

If it's a Bosch pump, the leak-off pipes will cause starting problems if they admit air. Priming bulbs are also known to fail. On my ZX, the braided pipe from the fuel filter to the pump failed (at a routine service!) and caused some embarrasment once the car had been stood overnight.

Do also check the blanking cap on the last injector. It can look Ok but account for many air leaks on the leakoff lines...

If it continues despite a good check for air leaks, come back to us...

No, should be a short black pipe with no hole in the end coming off the last injector (nearest the lhm resevoir).

Are you sure you got the right glow plugs too, as some are designed to heat then switch off once the engine is running, others (the ones needed) are designed to stay on for longer.

EVEN though the plugs have been in that long I WOULD check them again!

You've basically answered your own question - if she starts fine when warm, I reckon it could well be a plug or two EVEN if they are only 18 months old - Ive known to fit plugs and have them fail 10 months later!!

It wont be much, TD's dont need much to go...

Greetings from DK,

I had the same problem with my 1996 2.1 TD Xantia (360Kkm).

I changed to glow plugs (2 of them were dead). That didn't help a bit.
I changed the injectors. That didn't help a bit.
I then repaired a cracked fuel hose between the engine and cabin. Fault gone...
