Post by Chevron Terry »

Hi ,
I want to degrease my very oily engine bay .
What"s the best product to use and are there any areas that I would need to protect from the chemical and water ?
Terry . [ it"s an ZX Diesel engine ] .

Gunk, was the prefered product years ago, you paint it on, or I believe they do aspray on version now, then hose it off. Diesels are generally pretty water resistant but it might be an idea to protect and connectors and junction boxes.

I was never a fan of Gunk. In my experience it just formed a horrible slimy mass which wasn't miscible with water.

I much preferred using Jizer, which formed a proper emulsion with water. Nowadays I buy whatever is the cheapest degreaser from the motor factors.

Jizer does seem good.. I have 25L of very well used stuff in a bath, and am going to decant it back into a barrel and use in a garden weed sprayer, just for this type of work..

my be worth popping to a local garage and seeing if you can blag a gallon of their old stuff ?

Ive just replaced the rocker gasket on the S1 black Xantia TD, then used the aerosol spray gunk...

Did a wonderfull job on the head, didn't realise it was an alloy head under that oil !!

I thought it did a great job - and I just poured a watering can over it to wash it off...
