Xsara air con
Help! The air con on my 2002 Xsara has packed up. The light comes on but no cold air. Took it to a local Citroen garage who checked the air con and said that there was no problem with it and that it was an electrical problem. Anybody know if this is a common problem and any ideas on where to look first. There is a also quite a long standing problem with the auto lighting system and wondered if this has any bearing on the air con problem? The garage thought not!

I have had a few interesting things happen with my aircon. Which is still not working, but that is due to a leaking pipe running across the front under the rad....a common place for 306's and Xsara's a/c to fail. (Still need to fix or replace it.)
I had an electircal issue, which when I switched the a/c on, i had the high temp and stop light flash, same when i turned the demister to the windescreen setting, activating the a/c.
It turned out to be one of the rad fans, the number 1 fan, O/S fan that is had failed.
I have since replaced that fan motor with one sourced from a 306 and now i have no lights flash on the dashboard, and the cooling fans cut in and cool the engine long before it used to, when it used to almost hit the red mark on the gauge worryingly. It now very very rairly goes above 95 - 100 degress on the gauge, even sitting in traffic on a hot day.
Just try making sure the plug connector is clean and securely connected to the A/C pump.
Not sure if this will help your situation, but hopefully it may give you a couple of clues as where to look??
There are many good independant places that will service, and check A/C. Have a look on yell.com or similar. I had mine pressure tested and gassed with a dye in order to locate the leak, then vacuumed back out for £50 by a independent. I was then quoted £140 to buy a new pipe fit it, and regass, which is a little steep, so I am looking into doing a 'bodge' on the pipe, then getting it gassed.
One other thing to check, could be the pressure switch, which is located on the receiver/dryer, which is just behind the drivers side head lamp. On mine it has a brown connector on it.

Thanks for the suggestions Rob but in the end had to get an auto electrician to come round and have a look. He very quickly diagnosed the compressor clutch was duff, so will have to spend loads to get it replaced. Ah well its only money!
