HDI Cutting out

Post by f00lzz »

Hi all.

My son has just come home with a 2.0 HDI Xara Piccaso.
Bought cheap with a fault as follows:-

Vehicle has done 100k miles.. when stationary the engine will rev freely up to the red line, but on the road (under load) the engine will cut out and the engine management light will come on. He has it booked into the Dealer for a diagnostic check but I was hoping you guys with HDI's might be able to give us a heads up as regards the possible faults which we could expect to be faced with.
Thanks in anticipation

Turbo boost sensor?

What they probably wont tell you is the brake light switches are notorious for going faulty (causes ecu to halt fuel to engine) and the low pressure pumps in the fuel tank dont last loing.

APPARENTLY its only the EARLY HDi pumps that dont last long, and from about 2000 the pumps were sorted...

Could be the fuel pump sensor, on the end of the High pressure pump under the bonnet..

I had a xantia that did this, and changed the sensor on the end of the pump, and it sorted it..

Theres a lot of possibles on the HDi lumps.. we could all be guessing for ages..

Fraid not... our 2003 has just had to have a new LP pump at only 55k miles  Trouble is it's a tank out job on the Picasso, which is bit of a PITA. Dealer relieved us of £380 for fitting new pump and fuel filter  . It does at least leave a fault code so diag is easy!

The 90 bhp's dont have them.

I dont think the LP fuel pump will leave a fault code, its not directly connected to the ECU so i dont see how it could. The high pressure fuel sensor in the rail may detect something is up but that wont pinpoint the LP pump at fault.

OK I get the picture... lets wait and see what the diagnostics comes up with and take it from there.

I will keep you posted.

Cheers all

Hi Guy's

Just had a call from my Son. The garage have phoned and said to him that the diagnostic check pointed to 'fuel starvation' so they have changed the fuel filter and cleaned the fuel pipes and it is now OK.
I have asked him find out what fault codes came up on the diagnostic and what the fuel filter/lines were blocked with (thinking of disintigrating LP pump). If you can think of any other queries which may be useful for future reference let me know... he is picking the vehicle up at 18:00.

Thanks for your input everyone

You really want to know what blocked it in the 1st place like you say, If the LP pump had broken up that much to block the fuel filter I wouldnt have though the pump would run at all, usually the sign of this is little metal particles like from a file in the filter housing.
Is it possible that it has been run on something else apart from proper diesel ? used chipfat would certainly block it, might be worth a look in the tank.

Apparently! Because he collected the car as arranged at 18:00 he only got to speak to the receptionist who could only tell him that the charge of £150 was for diagnostic testing and replacement of fuel filter and the fuel filter housing!!
