Yes, something like that, or more likely, the radio has been pushed into the rat’s nest of wires behind, and it’s not sitting straight and flush on the mountings.
With the screws loosened, the radio must go in until you feel and hear it touch the stops.
If there’s a squashy feel of pinching wires, it won’t sit straight and the lid will catch somewhere.

Yes, 4 screws to take out from around the front plate.
May be fiddly if the blocked lid prevents access to the 2 lower screws.
You may find a proper radio from a wreck.

just measured the gap and there is no way the radio is going to fit through that hole

Seen radios/players with a large front panel, but don’t know what else has to go to take the place.
If there are no screws to see, your radio may have a removable control panel to take out when parked.
The picture shows the usual size with the screws and the cover latch that gets stuck if it’s not mounted straight.

I have noticed that the 2 sliding hinges on either side of the bay have an torx key or similar in there will that remove the bay door do you know?

I done it, the surround that goes around the front fascia had fallen down udner the radio hence stopping the door from swinging.
