high milage club

Post by shanemarsh1 »

My 1999 xantia 1.9TD has covered 203,000 miles and still pulls great. Does this get me in a high milage club ? "bit of fun"

Funny you should mention that. Had a VW Beetle in my student days in the (very) early 80'. Used to get a Volkswagen Magazine which had something called the 100,000 mile club. Full of aircooled VWs with the odd Volvo and I think a Morris 1100. Just shows how times have changed, don't usually buy cars with much under 100k these days and expect the same again out of them.

Past cars:

CX DTR turbo Safari - 266,000

XM 2.1 td estate - 292,000

Present cars:

XM 2.1 estate 235,000

XM 2.1 estate 196,000

XM saloon 185,00

Low mileage 2.1 XM estate 149,000

The 2.1 diesel isn't run in until at least 100,000 :D

I don't think there will be may Hdi's doing that sort of mileage, without considerable expense.

20 odd years ago I worked with someone who drove a Trimph Herald which came up for 300,000 miles.

I thought that was pretty impressive, but he said it was nothing special, as his previous car (another Herald) got to 700,000 miles before the chassis got terminal fatigue cracks. It apparently did have 5 engines, 3 gearboxes and 2 diffs in that lifetime.

I know of a guy near me with a fleet of C5 2.0 HDi taxi's.
One of them has done >440,000 miles.
They all run 17 hours a day.
He dumped his Moandayo fleet for C5s as they are more reliable an more economical :D

My (soon to be dismantled) current 306 has 218000 miles on the clock, although the actual mileage will now be 220000+ as the mileometer is now static following an electrical fire that took out the speedo along with a good bit of other electrical functionality. Cosmetically horrendous due to a hard past life, the running gear is still very good, and were it not for the electrics and a collapsed rear beam I'm sure 300000 miles would be within easy reach.

The only work done to the engine was a head gasket at 120000.

A friend ran an early 205 GRD, which he took to 420 000 miles, which was a good effort I felt. It did 350 000 without the engine being touched, however had a new head gasket and secondhand head fitted at that point when a burst radiator resulted in it boiling up.

It was only taken out of service due to tinworm...

My old TD i sold recently was on 174k. It felts like it had 20k on the clock, i had every confidence it would go to 300k.

My Montego TD had 203k when i sold it for bits, the engine is now in another Monty and is around the 250k mark, still thrashed with the fuelling up!

My Xantia 1.9 TD, all original except radiator, exhaust, brake disks and spheres, had 160,000+ when it was killed by a milkman, drove like a new car, had been exceptionally well cared for all through it's life.

It's strange isn't it how people knock Xantias and yet time and time again we see them running to great mileages. I fancied one but got put off by negative remarks.

I've discovered Cassy's odometer and trip get stuck (which explains the poor fuel economy) so while it says 140,000ish, I have no actual idea!

Oh right, if anything I would have thought it would be the XMs getting negative remarks? I still want one, one day!

IF is your correct word Peter - Because you have all the Few manuals in S2 cars!

Most S2 cars were auto, but theres a small amount of manuals about..

2.oi Petrol engines are ALSO very strong if they have been looked after.. Ive seen a many 2.oi 8v engines with big miles on them!
