Quick Price Comparison, s'il vous plait

Post by addo »

PSA part # 1628 1F ("Potentiometer")

Stealer price here is $508 - that's about £250.

What price does Service.Citroen suggest, inclusive of VAT for UK customers?

Thanks, Adam.

That's a stupid price for a pot. There will surely be a substitute that is acceptable?

It's the stacked TPS - one resistive track is for the engine ECU just like a BVM, while it has a "piggyback" resistive track and wiper for the auto alone.

I have a suspicion mine is a bit scratchy on the auto side, but at the likely cost of a new unit some deeper investigations are merited first!.

Thank you for looking it up Toby; I'm suprised the prices are so similar.

Regards, Adam.

They must have been smoking the stuff (pot, that is) to have come up with a price like that for a pot

Sometimes spares prices are just bizarre... Another decimal point in the wrong place.

Why do you think yours is a bit scratchy then Adam?

Hi Adam,

I’ve always sorted noisy pots with a squirt of holy water, while everyone around me was squealing to heaven.
This topic with pictures from VertVega shows the carbon tracks:

If you can see the manufacturer of the pot, perhaps you can obtain one from an electronics parts suplier for a more reasonable cost.

On reflection, I recently payed about that much for a motor driven volume pot for my stereo(just the pot, not the motor). I had erased that from my memory until your post resuscitated it.

This particular pot looks like a custom job, so I don't think you'll get one from RS or whoever.
However, the old tricks of rubbing a soft pencil over the tracks and retensioning and cleaning the wipers may well work wonders.
With care, it might even be possible to slighly reposition the track substrate so that a different area of track is swept.

Jim - I've noticed that the extremely harsh 3-2 kickdowns occur when the loud pedal is at a particular (light throttle) position. Similarly, WOT kickdown can be a hit-or-miss affair.

My theory is, it's losing conductivity at that point and the trans waits a second, then makes a decision based on other information fed to it. It doesn't log a fault, or hasn't so far.

If Paris the 405 keeps behaving (she only blew a high-beam fuse and one of the H4s last week  ) I'll have the confidence to pull the Xantia TPS apart.

Regards, Adam.

Your welcome Addo,

Just a note, I looked on both Citroen and Peugeot as I have found that for some things, it is cheaper on one or the other for the same part. Unfortunately not on this occasion.
