Welcome to the forums bennyboy.

My first guess would be broken wires in the conduit from the car body to the doors, particularly the driver's door.

There is no restriction on mentioning or linking to other forums.

It would be foolish in the extreme to pretend that this was the only forum dedicated to owners of French cars and as you have observed many of our members are also members of other forums as they own more than one make or model and other forums are more model specific.

I can't see that there is any rivalry, nor why there should be.

Concordance is the watchword :)

I'm sure Jim will agree.

The switches are a likely source for the problem too, as you say. Could be burned out or dirty contacts.

we now have working windows

Post by bennyboy »

just to let you know windows are working now..after taking door panel off i followed the 9 wires from the switches to find only 8 were connected,,the loose one was infact the earth for the motor..someone else has also been in there and done a repair with bullet connectors..one of these were also loose...
so the moral is time and patience to investigate properly..
thank you to everyone who replied with possible solutions

Hi Benny boy and welcome to the show :)

First Citroen ? surely not picking an XM....either way youve done yourself proud because XM's are awesomely styled and tipped for classic status very soon.

With any new car you always expect a few jobs to need doing. Its a fact of life, but we all hope to avoid the bigger costly jobs.

One thing is for certain...you will find alot of help on here, and knowledge....the XM forum too

Happy new XM.....you dont see that many riding around anymore

Have often thought of buying a Citroen over the years but never done it till 2 weeks ago,
i have always admired their styling, the Xm is like a spaceship.

My mates theory is if French cars were built to German engineering standards you would have awesome cars but the French let themselves down by using poor quality electrics, similar to Alfa Romeo in the late seventies, early eighties.

Anyway i will keep this one for a while and see what happens(hopefully nothing too expensive).

If I may offer some advice, the key phrase for owning a French car of this era is "Zero Tolerance". This applies to aspects of operation, whether they be warning lights, power windows or odd sounds from the motor.

Should any such issues raise their head, swat the problem immediately. The first few times you will blow a few bob as is natural for picking up the slack of past owners. After that it's a simple case of "Righto, here's the problem, lets repair or replace"...

Similar low tolerance should apply to any mechanic who is unable to convey a sense that they are comfortable working on the car. Don't let them learn (if they even do!) on your quid.

Cheers, Adam.

I must say Benny boy that i too used to believe the fallacy that German cars are on the whole more reliable than french,.....however this simply isnt true of German cars post 1990. At GSF we come across nearly all faults on all cars dealing with customers and mechnics all day. German cars are not that great at all. There are alot of common faults which you simply dont get on french vehicles.

For french vehicles the most stuff we do are "consumable" items like filters, clutch kits and cambelt kits etc. On the german stuff we do those too of course but also a bucket load of window regulators, various bushes, control arms, all manner of switches, and relays.

I must say though that Xsara Picasso's are particularly fond of window regulators alongside Laguna's too

Working in parts shows you the real picture away from the advertising and urban myths.....

Another thing too is Citroen specialists rave about C5's including the mk1's which is strange because ive read abotu alot of faults owners needed help on. Apparently they are the unlucky ones as they tend to be very reliable cars according to the trade :)

Xantias get rave reviews from mechanics 8)

The problem with XM's was that inferior electrical connectors were used due to a strain on funds in the PSA group at the time. Other than that they were good cars 8)
