Topic best xantia diesel models?
Hi all just thought about this topic/question? what's the best/liked/desired. xantia ie model/year/type/ ie early/later mk1/mk2. sinker/non sinker. D/SD/TD low pressure/normal turbo. lx/sx/vsx/activa. !.9/2.1/HDi. 90/110. even engine codes.pro's&con's of mechanical/semi mechanical/electrical pumps.bio/non bio fuel able cars.pitfalls on models.
Has we all have our own preferences/likes. and just a thought even for someone new or just looking to go for a diesel.as reading post from things ive found out and other little tit bits and just thought it might be something usefull/interesting for users/buyers etc?

1.9D / SD: Pros: simple. Cons: Sloooooow
1.9TD: Pros: Plentiful, long lived, better than it has a right to be for a 90 horse motor, cheap. Cons: Not that economical, bit underpowered for Xantia.
2.1TD: Pros: Plenty of torque and power, better gearbox. Cons: EPIC pump, availability, not liked by all (Xac....)
HDi 90: Pros: Reasonably plentiful. Cons: As below for HDi 110 and it's not an HDi 110 is it?
HDi 110: Pros: Power, torque, economy, gearbox. Cons: Expensive to buy, not all that many about (despite many buyers assertions that "Yes, it's a 110") and can go horribly horribly wrong.
MK1 / MK2 is largely a matter of taste and availability (eg HDi only in Mk2).
Spec: The higher the better - BUT - VSX / Exclusive can be riddled with suspension faults that might cost £££ to fix. Unless you're Jim

Only because they're so slow and can't run on vegRichardW wrote: 2.1TD: Pros: Plenty of torque and power, better gearbox. Cons: EPIC pump, availability, not liked by all (Xac....)
For me, I'd say MK1 1.9TD SX estate.
Runs on veg
Lots of ooomph
Loads of boot space
Easy to park and manouver (apparently no one told the Xantia they're a reasonably big car, they all think they're 205s )
Only 6 spheres
Electric windows all round
mp3 player interface port in the radio

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought an SD was basically a low pressure TD brought in to replace the 1.9D, because the 1.9D could not match the new stricter diesel emission laws. Making the SD the worst of all. All the (relative) complex downsides of the TD, with power <= 1.9D.
I'd call the 1.9D 'relaxed', if pushed it will do 90mph, with 50mpg, on the autobahn of course.

SERIES ONE's: Best: Early 1993 to 1995 models, 1993 having NO AIR bag to be nervious of, have the thoughest of the engines, SX Trim BEST as you get ALL electric and ABS, but no hydractive which can cause ride issues!
Engine a matter of choice, but TD the obvious choice, but DONT DO 8v petrol, go for 16v petrol's
SERIES TWO: AGAIN, the SX trim is the best choice! HDi 110bhp is more economical. Exclusive just gives leather, false wood, one touch all round on windows, hit and miss alloys (Albiet they look BEAUTIFULL). SX Not got hydractive so give a better smoother ride without possible problems.
AVIOD: 1997, 98, 99... these fitted with EGR's, these what can cause the famous piston through the side fault when they open and dump all the crap back into the engine... and simple avoid 1997, Ive had three in all with electrical problems.
(Touch wood, the P 1997 one I got ready to sell is SPOT ON! )
Thats my opnion.

If memory serves, the piston problems were mostly on XUDs fitted to 306s with DHY engine codes, where the rods from the D were fitted to the TD's.

Although I am a complete numpty when it comes to mechanical stuff, I have to say that I think I got lucky with my first ever Citroen. I really like it. A fantastic motorway cruiser, fast enough on open roads in its td guise, leccy windows all round and sun roof of course, and best of all runs on WVO! Probably the only thing that could be better was if I got an estate. So I guess I agree with Xac.

A VERY generious spec for a mass car... How Fords or Vauxs have the same level of Spec in the middle trim level??

Was it only the 306 that suffered this problem then??Xac wrote:If memory serves, the piston problems were mostly on XUDs fitted to 306s with DHY engine codes, where the rods from the D were fitted to the TD's.
I wondered how a customer of mine with a T reg 1998 Xant TD, has managed 273,000 on the ORIGINAL ENGINE AND HEAD GASKET....
Ive been expecting a bang during the last 50k or so

Mostly 306s, I think some made their way into one or two ZX and Xsaras.citroenxm wrote:Was it only the 306 that suffered this problem then??Xac wrote:If memory serves, the piston problems were mostly on XUDs fitted to 306s with DHY engine codes, where the rods from the D were fitted to the TD's.

From what I've read it's DHY code engines made between April 1997 and April 1998

Because the lucas epic is a party-pooper that won't let the car have any fun.Peter.N. wrote:I don't know why the 2.1 is considered slow, its 20 bhp and lots of lb/ft more powerful that the 1.9 and much more efficient. Swapping the pumps and pipes, not too much, it's the ECU that's the problem as it runs the speedo.dieseldoggy wrote:so how much would it take to convert to bosch pump then? keep hearing about project but no fruition! may'be could start a post/topic on conversion of well known problems with ways round?Xac wrote:Because the lucas epic is a party-pooper that won't let the car have any fun.Peter.N. wrote:I don't know why the 2.1 is considered slow, its 20 bhp and lots of lb/ft more powerful that the 1.9 and much more efficient. You'd have to fit a normal accelorator cable too as the 2.1TD Xantia is fly by wire.
