1994 Xantia half shaft bearing

Unread post by citroenxm »

Hi all..

(Thats the 1.9td in my signiture) 208k, and my half shaft bearing has collapsed, firstly indicated by a vibrating noise comming into the cabin, but confirmed with attempting a clutch change and the half shaft wont come out..

got the gearbox off the shaft, but going to have to take the bearing carrier and shaft off complete and get it in eye views...

Does anyone know if the bearing is available as a single piece, or am I better buying the Half shaft and carrier thats on ebay for £25 plus post???

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

Do you mean the intermediate bearing on the RH driveshaft?

If so, it's just a ball race on the shaft and in theory it can be replaced but a special puller is needed. The bearing carrier (casting attached to the engine block) is just a housing.

Mostly, if the bearing does go, it's best and easiest to replace the whole driveshaft.

Or do you mean one of the diff bearings in the gearbox?

Half shaft bearing, in the bottom engine mount housing...

Gearbox seems in-destructable! The ball's have all fallen out the disintrigated races, so I thinks its seen better days..

Im ok for the desperate near time, as I remembered I had a half shaft from an LX Td of the same vintage, so I just swapped the out halfs over, due to non ABS CV joint.. and car has got ABS..

Cheers Jim

hi Paul
i would have thought if the int bearing has completly colapsed you would be able to pull the shaft out leaveing the int bearing outter race in sittue, then once the shaft is out of the way pull/drift the outter race out,
