does anybody know where it connects to the gearbox? Mine has become intermittent, especially when the engine is hot and I need to investigate.

If it's a pre-ECU 1.9TD we are talking about, then it's on the flange on the back of the flywheel end of the engine, above the O/S driveshaft - held in with single 10mm bolt. Bit awkward to get to :? I think there is also a brown connector on top of the engine somewhere.

Do not use a ratchet spanner to take the bolt out as it will foul against the drive shaft and you won't be able to get the spanner off the bolt when it is undone, and you won't be able to remove the bolt not sensor. Use an open ended spanner.

Also it can be found there on an ECU equipped 1.9TD, as we discovered on mine last weekend

The problem could well be to be caused by the 2 pin plug on the lead from the sensor. End of the cylinder head just above the gearbox. Give it a good clean and a smear of grease
