It's possible the larger ones are for ABS equipped cars? I know the rear brake feed pipe is larger for ABS cars.

I've just had to replace one of the front brake pipes on my Xantia, one that goes from the ABS valve block to the flexible hose for my MOT.

The previous weekend I'd got my local independent Citroen specialist to make up a rear suspension pipe which he did, but he couldn't make up the front brake pipe I needed so it had to come from the main dealer. He said that for earlier cars the pipes aren't available even from the dealer, luckily mine is a later car so the pipe was available.

From what I've read. 4.75mm is a standard pipe diameter (the metric equivilent of 3/16"), having spoken to both a mechanic at the garage and the owner of the garage, there seems to be some issue with wall thickness and being able to put the citroen type flare on standard pipe.

4.75mm (more correctly : 4.76mm) is the standard 3/16" brake pipe dimension used on almost any car.

EXCEPT hydraulic Citroens
Hydraulic Citroens uses 2 proprietary pipe dimensions :
3.5mm for standard hydraulic piping
4.5mm for ABS brakes, some intermediate (sfaety valve) and earlier type servo assist steering piping.

It is in fact very easy to confuse the 4.5mm piping with the standard 3/16" piping.
But once it comes to assembling the piping into any pipeport, you will immediately encounter the problem : the bore is simply too narrow.

You may get away using standard 3/16" piping if you prepare an inch or so of the pipe ends sanding them down 1.5 tenths of a mm.
But you still need to do the (very !) special Citroen flaring ...

EDIT : in this case it seems that Citroen deceided using standard 3/16" piping according to service.net.
I'd check with a caliper/vernier on car if it is in fact the correct dimension.
