ZX stall problems

Unread post by AndyR »

Hello,
I've just got a 1991 ZX advantage. Apart from dodgy central locking and hand brake lamp wiring (which I have cracked) I am having problems with stalls at junctions. Basically any time that work is required of the engine and its idling there is a problem. You put your foot on the accelerator and the revs fall and the engine starts stumbling and sounding like its about to cut out (which it has done before). I've has the carb off to have a peek, Haynes reckons that the accelerator pump should pump 2 jets into the intake manifold, but I can see only one jet operating. I have adjusted the idle mixture and that makes not difference at all. I have just replaced the plugs (the old ones where black: too rich at idle?) but that makes no difference either. I do have a hole on the exhaust (I'm not too sure how big but it was big enough to cause it to fail its MOT last time). Also the cam belt was recently replaced (not by me!) could that be a problem? I think (I'll have to check the docs) that the cam belt was replaced by a garage. Anyway any help would be great (esp Dave Burns!!).
Thanks
Andy

Check all the obvious stuff first, air filter will cause rich running and black plugs if fouled up.
Operation of choke especialy if its automatic.
Vacuum pipes to brake servo and (if it has one) vacuum advance to distributor.
Manifold leaks, obstructed intake, check timing is correct including belt position.
Where has the other accelerator jet of fuel got to, (if there realy is supposed to be two) can you see where it should come from.
Carburettor problems, blocked jets, wrong float setting or worn float chamber needle valve.
Failing that, rid it and get a diesel, hehe just joking[:o)]
Good luck
Dave
