V6 Drop Links

Unread post by CitroJim »

Both drop links on my V6 need replacing. Shame as they look quite recent but the rubber boots are split :( I don't think the MOT tester will be best pleased with them.

Are the V6 links the same as on any other (later) Xantia?

Sorry for asking this yet again but which of the plethora offered by GSF are the ones to go for?

Many thanks...
Jim

Yes, the same as all post 1994 Xantia.

I jsut got back from Burgundy, and the trip has done for a rear wheel bearing on mine (cant hear the exhaust for the noise), so another job to do.

Thank you sir :D

Sorry to hear about the wheel bearing :( There's a hydraulic press here if it will help with replacement.

Jim,

The expensive ones from GSF are the Lemforder OE ones - ISTR they are about £30 each.

I'm not sure a split cover is reason for rejection:
MOT Manual wrote:If a steering joint dust cover is split or missing greater care must be taken when resting the joints. If no other defects are found the tester should advise the presenter.
Although that appears to relate to steering joints only there does not appear to be a reason for rejection relating to dust covers on suspension joints. Not to say that your man won't fail it of course..... and probably best changed anyway, as if the cover is split, the joint is unlikely to be far behind

Interestingly there was a change on later MK2 cars to links with 90° joints on both ends. They seem to be longer lasting - mine is still on its original at 85k with no noise apparent.

drop links dont fail through split boot's or play, or apparently if completly missing, but if one end is hanging loose completly this acording to my MOT station is a fail,

and i agree with Richard the better quality Lemforder units, as a lot of people on here have said the cheap ones dont last 5minn's,

so dose this mean the V6 is moveing about under it's own STEAM TOOOT TOOOT

Thanks folks :D

Never realised the subtleties of the MOT test on drop links

I'll swap them as I think it always looks like the car is cared for if the MOT tester can see something has been replaced...

Wonder if he'll notice the engine and gearbox look like new

Good to hear that 4HP20 is a good 'un. I know where to come when mine packs up now

Not sure I'll be taking on 4HP20 repairs on a routine basis

Have you read my adventures with my V6 Stempy?

Repairing a 4HP20 is not exactly trivial. I can see why it costs a lot of money but having said that, a second job would be considerably easier. The learning curve was steep... :D I reckon I could knock one out in a week now.

My one piece of advice with any autobox problem is to stop immediately and in that way damage that could write-off the 'box will most likely be avoided.
