Ooooops! clutch cable clip?

Post by lexi »

Only 5mins from home tonight and clutch pedal went ping!. It was dark . I managed to turn off engine and select 1st gear. It went on starter and I got home in first gear.

Just getting out of the car and having a quick look I cannot see the cluch pedal lever. Maybe it has flown out of the window when it pinged. I have a spare cable clip in glove compartment so will have a look in the morning.

I aint done this before so any tips appreciated.

Easier if it's a later car with self adjusting cable as the spring is easier - and ISTR that MK2 cars are substantially easier.

Of course if this is your HDi 110 then it's not the clip, since it doesn't have one - just a ££££ hydraulic system instead

the main tip is please dont resort to butchery of any of the area or chopping of the bolt head, as none of this is necesary,

all you need to arm your self with is quite a lot of PERCY WHAT SIT, and obviously the tools to do the job with,

if the nylon block is still intackt it is possible to fit just the metal clip without removing the pedel, as i have just the other week fitted a new cable for one of my cutomers, i know its unheard of a XANT cable going but this one had and the clip was still good,

i made a very tight hook at the end of a wire coat hanger to hook out the clip, fitted the new cable feeding it into the nylon block all the way, then re/fitted the metal clip with long nosed pliers, and bongo job done

Ok guys. Pedal bolt is out and clip is broken at usual place. NOW! where do we disconnect clutch cable to feed through and get slack? At the actuating arm? Is that a case of N/S front wheel off then support and get under from there?

This job calls for a Mechanically minded Masochistic Midget!!!

All done! What a horrible little bit of plastic that thing is. It`s like summat from a cheap Chinese plastic doll.

For the pedal bolt I found that stubby ratchet and 13mm deep or long socket was best. Hold the nylock nut with and open ender until the space is there to get a ring spanner in. It`s one of those jobs that can`t really be explained as it only becomes evident when you are in there yourself.

However: After all this I get the feeling that this clip is going to break again. It is working ok but at times you feel that notchy creaking effect.

The clip I used was a white one purchased from Ebay. The one that broke was a black clip which may have been original. The whte one looks as crap as the broken one. Does anyone make an all metal moulding?

I know that the clevis pin could be made in metal bit it seems that the clips break at the tube where it moulds on to the main body. There is a pathetic attempt at a little gusset there......... but FFS this thing takes a lot
of punishment.

hi Lexi, I fear your clutch and / or cable may be causing the clip to break
:(

clutch change isn't a massive nightmare... 4-7 hours depending on how many you have done :)

Well John there is a slight judder from clutch on release. This despite having a receipt for a new cliutch when I bought it . The bill looked genuine with a Vat number transaction and was for £396. Only done 7k since then. Clutch doesn`t feel heavy. Do you suspect a stiff clutch would break the clip? Why does everybody elses break then?

I bought a spare clip at Stealers today.........£10.86. It is a white one which is the same colour as the one fitted today. So it looks like the black one which broke may have been aftermarket.

I certainly don`t want to be doing a clutch in the summer as I need car to fish.

There has been several clutch cable clip failure messages that I had to get my spare clip  and it travels in the glove box :!:

With the aid of digital camera I have taken a closer look at the clip connected to the pedal. It is still the original part and it is black colored.
The spare clip (not after market) is white colored.

By the way did you have to remove the front seat or can it be fixed just by sliding the seat backwards :?:

Hi VV.

The seat removal will depend how big you are. I removed the seat. Try to get a power drive of some sort on the Torx seat bolts as they are a PITA to loosen manually. There are four or five of them so make a note or pic where they come out so seat alignment is easy on re -fixing.

The thing is that while it is an idea to keep the clip in glove compartment you need to carry the tools to go with it.........I do now.

Mind you I wouldn`t like to do that job at the side of a Highland road with midgies eating you alive

Thanks lexi, I guess I would also prefer to remove the seat. Even taking a photo needed acrobatic movements :)

Here is my contribution, a picture where the factory assembly clip is seen.
It is still in one piece [-o< and I hope it will be like that for a looooong time.

I have marked the bolt and the nut. May be this picture would help other Xantia owners as well (This is a LHD Xantia).

so VertVega what is in the way/path of the bolt comming out on a LHD car as your picy then, because if the bolt was that way round on a RHD car it makes the job a lot easyer
