Well, the question of fitting can be simply answered after running a tape across my V6 engine and transmission. Basically, if the whole engine and transmission occupies no more than a metre cube then it'll fit a Xantia engine bay...
Exhaust is in about the right place as well but getting the driveshafts right may be interesting....

That was my thinking.
I imagine it would be hard on driveshafts, as you'd have to set the transaxle centreline back a little from GM's designed position due to the shorter engine bay.
The other snag could be hydraulics - if they normally run electric assist steering you'd have to work out how the pump might be operated.
