Ghost warning lights

Post by firstrebel »

On several occasions yesterday two warniing lights flashed dimly for short periods. They are not in the handbook and they do not light up when the ignition is switched on. They are in the top left of the bank of warning lights on the dash. They were orange. Because I was driving I could not look at them too long to identify the symbol, and they were not there long. Any ideas?

One of them may have been the engines self diagnostic light, mine comes on above 1900 revs when my filter is clogged from veg oil!!

thing is its a bit difficult to say why it came on :? . Where there any other symptoms, like a drop in power etc?

I am about to change the fuel filter today. I can't comment on any drop in power as I can only assume it is running as it should. Since my other car is a 280bhp Volvo I have to 'detune' my level of expectation about its performance.

Not sure, I only had a quick glance and they were faint and flickering. I will see if it happens again and try to get a longer look.

Thanks.

'Faint and flickering' suggests a poor earth somewhere in the instrument panel wiring, or possibly one of the isolation diodes within the panel beginning to fail.
It'll either get worse, or never happen again :D

I'm sure I've read that some later cars have an excess boost warning light. Could that be one of them?

It was only these two that were faint and flickering. All the others are OK.

I don't think so, I was on a light throttle in 2nd gear about 5 minutes after starting in the morning.

One of these came on again this morning, and in fact stayed on when I applied the handbrake at traffic lights. It is the worn brake pad light. Don't know why as the front discs and pads were changed only a few weeks ago.

More than likely a pad contact wire has been incorrectly routed, and severed by the disc. Very common!

It was the offside outer pad wire. The rubber thingy that holds both wires had flipped open and the wire was close to the disc, and apparantly touched it with vibrations and movement.
