306 2.0 hdi starting problems
i have a x reg 306 2.0 hdi. the last 2 weeks the car has progresivly took longer to start and now barely starts at all. i fitted a new set of glow plugs and no difference, upon testing i realised i had no power to plugs when trying to start. this may have been because the temp was above 2 degres but light on dash normually flashes and now dosent. i have replaced the glow plug relay and 2 relays mounted behind battery. also has a new battery. when engine does start or is jumped and running i have a permenent supply to glow plugs which kills the car after 5 miles.does anyone have any ideas please......

If you could have the engine codes read that would be helpful. What leads you to think that power to the glowplugs stops the engine?
A non starting HDi can be the symptoms of low fuel pressure generated by the injection pump. Below a certain pressure the ECU won't even attempt to fire the injectors/start the engine.
HDi's power the glowplugs (with the engine running) when cold to aid smoothness and cut emissions. However I'm not sure if this relates to all HDi's or not. A trip to a Bosch specialist for a diagnosis will usually be better and cheaper than a dealer.
Hope that helps?
Steve.

The lift pump in the tank is cracking up!jimboy wrote:thanks steve. had ecu tested and came back fine. i removed the fuel filter and found metal particles! the pump in the tank is buzzing, does this mean its working? do the high pressure pumps ever fail and do you know roughly how much these pumps are? ps when car does start it runs ok. thanks
If those metal particles get through into the diesel pump, that will be kaput too.

Hi Jimboy,
Unfortunately the high pressure pump is incredibly delicate and expensive. The metal particles in the filter show that the tank pump is breaking up and MG said. Usually the tank pump sheds particles that find their way past the filter and then destroy the injection pump and injectors. It's been speculated that sometimes misfuelling leads to the lift pump disintegrating at a later stage.
Price wise from a dealership you'll be looking at well over £1000 for the injection pump and fitting. In your position I would replace the entire filter housing and lift pump plus fit an additional sealed diesel filter too, something from VAG should do the trick. Run the car and hope for the best.
Hope that helps.
