Hi all,
as some of you know i recently purchased a xantia V6.
to cut a long storey short, i was going to change the gearbox oil on the car, having just changed the gearbox oil on my other auto (AL4), and shock horror there is no dipstick! Just a hole where one should be !

Please can anyone help, I would be eternally grateful and sent some money your way for the trouble. need this part asap, going to try some local breakers see if they have any Xantia/406 V6's.

Hi Sid,

Worry not :D The later 4HP20 had the dipstick deleted. My spares 'box is a later one and whilst it has the hole for the dipstick visible, it is blind. In fact it'll likely be fulll of dirt and rubbish

Citroen issued an "Evoloution" to amend the method of checking the level and refilling these dispstickless boxes and I have pleasure in offering this link to a copy of the document that describes the procedure.

Hope that helps Sid. How's the Green Goblin going? Are you enjoying it?

Jim you are an absolute star :D

Thank you so much. I was really panicking there, imagine all the rubbish that could have got into the gearbox through the apparent open hole.

Right I'm going to tackle this gearbox this afternoon, hopefully the oil will look nicer than the horrendous stuff that came out of la vache earlier today.

I am enjoying the green goblin, theres a few jobs which need my attention, flat AC, cd player intermittently reading cd's, I think something not quite right with the engine, as its not very sensitive to slight throttle, certainly has power if you push a bit harder, maybe its nothing.

Feeling much happier now :)

Sid, you do know that you must use a special oil for the 4HP20?

In case you don't, it's Esso LT71141. Use no other! It's quite expensive and normally available in 20 litre drums - I located some on the net at about £125 but eventually sourced 5 litres at about £40 including postage. I drained off about 4 litres when I changed mine.

It may be available at Cit main dealers under their own part number.

Sorry if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs but it's so important that I had to mention it!

:) don't worry folks I was aware of the oil requirements, picked some up last week from Citroen in Hatfield. spend £77 for 8 liters of box oil and 2 liters of LHM. stuff is not cheap!
