Citroen C5 HDI Lack of Power and Banging
Okay. I haver a 02 plate Citroen C5I which now seems to lack power. I have no warning lights but particularly when on a hill the car basically dies and I am overtaken by midget cars.
On the downhill or falt it does build up the speed but and as soon as it hits 3000rpm it takes off (I presume the turbo kicking in)
I know nothing about cars but the local dealership want to have it in to check. The car has done 110k miles and I am not sure I want to pay these crooks again to look at the car and do nothing.
I have noticed lately the smell of fumes is greater.
I also have a banging above the undertray at the rear right which indicates something loose.
Can this lack of power be down to Eolys needing topped up or what else could it be. Help would be appreciated as I have to MOT shortly.

Not sure
It is an 2ltr HDi (I think but nearly sure 110 BHP, how can I tell)
The power is simply not there until 3000 revs. Got a long journey to France from scotland coming up and the MOT in the next week or so, so would be grateful of any further advice.
Incidentally does this model not use Eolys?
This was only a thought after reading this forum.

What spec is your C5? If its a LX it could be either a 90 or 110BHP, if its an SX or above it will be the 110. The 110 has more pipes under the bonnet, so thats an easier way to tell too. Also, both of our C5s has a sticker on the B pillar in the door shut on the drivers side, which says 2.0HDi 110bhp. Check for that.
The earlier 2.0HDi (both 90 & 110) does not have a FAP filter, therefore no Eolys fluid.
So it is performing fine after 3000rpm?
Our C5 estate would not perform under 2000rpm, it needed a replacement MAF sensor as the one which had just been fitted was an aftermarket jobbie, which it didn’t like. A genuine Citroen one cured that problem.
Yours sounds worse, so id guess it might have put in codes which could be read by a garage with a Lexia program.

Well as others have said it's not a FAP so no Eolys.
Very strange behavior for a HDi, both that I've had (110 bhp) pull hard from 1500 (max torque about 1750rpm) and aren't really worth reving much higher than 3000rpm.
If the MAF sensor is that faulty unplugging it will increase the performance but will log a fault in the ECU memory and light the engine management indicator. A quick simple test.
Maybe a silly question but does the engine management light show before starting the engine - I'm thinking along the lines of a blown bulb? In any case I think you need the codes reading. Finding faults on HDi's by the search and replace method can be very long winded and expensive. I'd still recommend a Bosch specialist if only for the diagnosis.
Steve.

HDI 2.0 LX (I THINK) 110BHP
The car is HDI 2.0 and a LX (I THINK). It is 110 BHP and a manual.
As said it has little grunt. It does pull away but the moment it hits a hill it struggles and loses speed and can't accelerate until it his 3000. On the flat it is okay.
You mention unplugging the MAF sensor. I have zero idea regarding cars so don't know what this is.
So there is no Eolys to worry about?
it does smell more polluting than most times and previously had to have flusher in the fuel tank to resit MOT which were failed due to emmissions. MOT due in next week.
Can I go to a Bosch service agentjust to have read?

An LX has black bump strips?
And no, 2.0HDis dont have Eolys fluid, only the 2.2HDi and later HDis.
The MAF sensor is located on the air intake pipe, if you look at the air box, which is to the left of the battery, there is a black box (airbox), there is a big pipe comes out of the box and runs along the top of the engine bay, to the right of the engine. On that pipe there is a thing sticking out, a grey plug with wires attatched. That is the MAF, SteelCity suggested unpluging that to see if it makes a difference to the cars performance.
Im not sure if a Bosch agent can read codes on C5s, Steve will probaby know.

Thanks
Thanks you guys you are being really helpful. Sooner I get to the bottom of that the happier I will be my journey wont be knackered. Any further info welcome.
Anyway tried to get the sensor off the airpipe but it is extremely tight. The wires offer no room for manouver.
As for lights, I get the oil light and the catylitic convertor lights as well as red bulb when turning ignition but they go right after the engine is started. Nothing remains on. This is normal is it not?

I know little about the HDi but from the symptoms, it soulds like it's lost almost all of its turbo boost.
It'll be worth checking all the turbo hoses are intact and that the intercooler has no sprung a leak. I've heard of the hoses splitting on some models in the past. also check for kinks in a hose, restricting airflow. The turbo wastegate may be sticking open perhaps?
Loss of boost on the old-school diesels make them truely gutless.

Good point Must read threads more carefully. It could still be a probem with the activation of teh wastegate though as at 3000rpm, even if the wastegate was stuck open there would likely be sufficient boost developed to make it run more or less normally at high revs...boristhespie wrote: When it hits 3000 rpm it shoots off physically pushing you back in your chair.
