Bosch diesel Pump

Post by KennyW »

Hi Gang,

My Bosch VP20 diesel pump on my Xantia would appear to be drawing air.
Having read citrojim's diesel pump stip down and rebuild. Ibelieve the problem probably lies in the distribution part with the seal.

I've spoken to merlin diesels who state Bosch no longer do a repair kit.

Does anybody out there know of anywhere else that does these kits :?:

Otherwise I will have to find a second hand pump not going to pay the high prices quoted for exchange :!:
Bosch Pump £998 and other manufacturer £550.
Also a company for Fife can repair some but at what cost :?:

What's the symptoms you're getting Kenny?

Be detailed and I should then be able to diagnose the problem.

Leaks around the distributor head will not cause air to be drawn; a poor seal here will result in fuel leakage.

Seal kits are available and very reasonably priced.

Those prices you have quoted are outrageous

I agree, plenty of secondhand pumps out there if you need one, look on ebay.

Good Morning,

Jim you asked for the symptoms so here goes :? ,

I detailed some of the problems in a previous entry, but it all started with the change of ignition barrell  . I changed the barrell keys recoded and all attempts to start the car -ve. It would turn over and eventually wear down the battery( hence my battery question).I got away from the garage when they used quick start.Once running no problems but as soon as you stop it struggles or doesn't start.
I was able to start it by using the priming pump, pumping this until it was hard and then turning the engine over for about 24 time approx, pumping the accelerator and catching the engine when it fires up with some reviving. :)
I have checked for leaks and any signs of air getting into the system to the pump and can't find anything obvious. The fuel line from the fuel filter housing to the pump is clear and no signs of any bubbles.

I read your blog re the pump strip down and re build and i feel the problems lies within the pump.

I was considering re newing all the fuel hoses to the pump as well.

Your thoughts and opinion would be appreciated.

Sounds like the glow plugs aren't working to me ........................ :) Otherwise it wouldn't run perfectly once started !

The fact it happened after you messed with the ignition switch SCREAMS REALLY LOUDLY ( ) you have manged to kill or disconnect the glow plug timer when you had the switch out :)

Glow plugs.
Jenny had 4 dead glow plugs and while my next door neighbour was using her, she'd regularly run the battery down.
Flooring the accelerator and turning over would eventually get her to start (after charging the battery).
Swapped out the two easy to reach plugs and she starts pretty much straight away now, so have to change the other two asap.
I tested the old plugs, one was completely dead, the other was glowing red all the way up itself rather than just the tip.
With them actually being dead, no amount of glow plug cycles was helping.

Take the two plugs out that are closest to the gearbox and connect them to the battery via jump leads to see how they glow.
If they're working properly and glowing white hot at the tips, then as DC said, the next thing to check is the timing circuit for them.

Just measuring the voltage on them will give you a good indication that they're working.

Okay, I measured the voltages passing throught the supply cable to the glow plugs, on cylinders 1,2 & 3 result 10.50 V but nothing on 4  .

Everyone knows No 4 is behind the pump :!:

I'll have to take off all the nuts and check the supply wiring for a breakage.

I'll get back to everyone with an answer soon.

Removed supply wire from glow plugs and it appeared fine.Refitted same and it appears i have supply to all 4 glow plugs.

During this I found the return pipe from injector 4 to the pump came off relatively easily.

How tight a fit should this be and could this be the cause of the air entering my system :?:

It should be a good, tight, snug fit Kenny.

Was it wet with diesel?

If the whole of the fuel supply (including return lines) are not 100% airtight, it will prove hard to start.

When it won't start, is there any smoke issuing from the exhaust and if so, what colour?

A good test to perform (with care) is to slacken an injector union and see if fuel flows when trying a start.

Smoke does appear fromm exhaust.

Have opened injectors and it is a trickle of fuel coming through, not coming out under pressure ie spurting.

Hence my thoughts a problem witihin the pump, how do you check for problems with the stop solenoid?
My reasoning is my pump is armour plated  :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Any thoughts :?:
