1.9td exhaust

Post by lexi »

My estate passed it`s mot today :) One advisory was rear silencer. It`s quite a big box.......but...is it needed? I suppose the answer is that it is.

However my understanding of turbo diesels id that the turbo it`self kills a lot of the noise and that a straight pipe at the back may suffice. I can fab something with welder. Anyone done away with theirs? Not the wife..........the back box  . If the price aint too bad or there are issues then I will get one . How much at GSF?

Not sure about doing away with it, but when my one went i first bodged it with chemical metal, then went to scrappy and got one for 20 quid!

Yes scrappy is an option if box is silly money. Not many Xantias in breakers around here. Any cars that I know of are not estates or are sitting with another car on top of them.

I wouldn`t normally touch a breakers for an exhaust although I have seen some very good boxes on other cars. I just want to get car sound as I may be letting her go. Either that or will sell the HDI. Aint made my mind up as I just don`t have the room. Would love to keep both :(

Its true that the turbo does take a lot of the noise out - but not all of it. I don't know how it would fare at MOT time with a box missing.

I've bought some very shiny exhausts from scrapyards before and had them last no time at all. My theory is that the moisture from the car's last run lies at the bottom of the silencer and rusts it from the inside out.

I needed one for my MK1 and found eurocarparts were the cheapest - around £39 a couple of years ago.

Guys,

I can vouch that removing the rear backbox will not result in a quiet ride. Mine sheared off in the usual place a while back. at 60mph it is bearable, but at all other speeds its not.

As far as rear boxes go, working in the parts game the phrase "you get what you pay for" rings very true in exhaust bits. I bought a cheaper back box from GSF at around £30 ish (i get discount) and soon after changed it for the dearer version. The difference is substancial

With second hand boxes, you dont know if there are any loose baffles inside which will soon result ina new box again so in my opinion its not worth the hassle.

Box sheared today. Just at the silencer itself. Will get one tomorrow. Hey Vince ...when you mention a "better " box ? Do you mean better than Bosal...or what?

Just for the record guys. The box was £51 incl the clamp from GSF.

When I got it home I discovered it was for the saloon rather than my estate  .

I could not be bothered taking it back. The salooon rear hanger is on the opposite side. I welded a bit of rebar onto where the old hanger was to make a new one which crossed over to other side.

Apart from the tailpipe and box being shorter it should be ok. as it`s the same engine and power output. Wonder how much the slightly bigger estate box would have been?
