Intriguing/Dodgy Citroen ZX spotted for sale

Post by TomH »

I spotted this Citroen ZX for sale... I thought the latest they came was on an 'R' plate, but this one is a 'T', and a 2.0 auto which I wasn't sure they sold after the facelift. Does it look dodgy to anyone else, or can it be explained? :?

I've seen something similar before, on a ZX as well. Something to do with the date of first registration. If you think about it, the date of manufacture doesn't necessarily relate to the vehicle reg. Look up your Citroen's RP number - you may get a surprise!

Hi All

I can second the surpise you may get when checking the RP number. Have come across delayed registration with a good number of early Mk2 XM's. Citroen over produced RHD cars particularly estates compared to sales and many stood around unregistered for anything up to 2 years.

This can cause real problems if you use the registration letter when ordering spare parts.

So, given Mike's excellent detective work, it appears to not be dodgy at all.

Well, I was puzzled since HPI and other check websites don't have info on the model, just "Citroen", and I thought that there wasn't a 2.0 petrol in the line up that late (post '94 facelift when they got rid of the names like 'volcane')- just the 1.4 and maybe a 1.8

I think the facelift was '96 or so. But you're right - they only offered 1.4 manual or 1.8 auto in petrol engines. That looks like a Volcane, and it's certainly a rare spec. Possibly bought abroad or something like that, maybe an import from someone in HM Forces? Or one that hung around a dealership for some reason? Very rare to find one with aircon.

I saw a unusual Xsara for sale. It was a HDi 110 SX Automatic but I didn't think they did those in this country. Another strange thing was it is 2003 but it had the steering wheel with radio controls on it from 2001. It also has a sat nav which is rare.

Its possibly due to the fact its not a popular model.

It will have been stood around for a goos while after production, as a 2.0 automatic would not have been a popular choice.

We had a Cx a few years ago, which was one of the very last ones registered. This was because the original owner wanted one as a company car, but was not due one for a few months. So he talked his local dealer into keeping their showroom model for him until his company car was due. It was then registered for him. He then bought it from the company and kept it for a good few years, until we bought it, it was a minter!

So it could be something like that. Certainly looks to have a few optional extras, stick on things on the ZX.

Ive always really liked Zxs, very good cars 8)

I agree.. Driven a few when my cars went back to dealer for servicing/repairs etc.. always impressed, plenty of room etc. I always fancied one for their 'back to basics' style of motoring.

Where was this one for sale? I might fancy a look myself

If you want to know when a car was built, a good guide are the date marks on moulded plastic components; the favourite being the underside of the ashtray. Not infallible as the component in question could have been replaced from a scrapper (or been held in stock for a while). On a Xantia, turn over the carpet under the rear seat squab - there should be a paper sticker giving supllier batch details.

I noticed that label when fitting the CD Changer loom, mine was built during the 10th month and registered a matter of a few weeks later
