Heater controls VSX 1998

Hi all
have got my blower working now but have found that it only blows out hot air regardless of where the temp slider is set

Can anyone give me a breakdown on how the system works

Also i have noticed that the internal/external slider is relatively resistance free and im not sure if this slider operates what appears to be a flap under the air intake under the scuttle

remind us whether it is A/C or not?

If the recirc control has no resistance, but feels a bit springy, then the cable is certainly kinked in the control head. With care and luck it can be straightened, but check that the cable is not misrouted due to someone playing behind the dash.

Yes it does have A/C but have not investigated any further than the fact it blows hot air constantly

As it is equipped with AC, the temperature is controlled by the ECU, and there is no mechanical connection from the temperature control to the air flap.

I have no experience of diagnosing this part of the system, but note that there are early and late versions of the system (with different controls and ECU). The later version was introduced late in the Mk1 Xantia, and has no "off" position on the fan control.

Hi Colin,

The airflow from the heater matrix is controlled by a flap operated by a stepper motor with plastic reduction gears and metal flap drive cog.
The motor is controlled by a potentiometer driven by the temperature slider.

The picture of a broken plastic drive cog is from an XM.
The motor can be felt for motion, and is at the very front bottom of the centre console, on the passenger’s side.

The internal/external slider goes as per Xantia_v6’s post, and operates the inlet air flap only.

Thanks for the replies the problems have now been fixed

Managed to straighten out the cable for the flap and has been working fine all afternoon

Not sure what/if anything i did but the blower now blows hot and cold air although sometimes it takes a while for it to adjust the temp could be something to do with the car having been stood still for best part of 3 years.... maybe its an ecu that needs to learn
