2.0 HDi 136 timing belt interval?

Post by GaryP »

Anyone know when the timing belt should be changed on an 05-plate C5 2.0 HDi - the later version with 136bhp?

Mine has done 114k miles, with full Citroen service history (every 20k,) but none of the job sheets seem to indicate that the belt has been done, and it's not clear from them when it should be.

If it's due or overdue, then it would be very helpful to know so I can budget for it at the 120k service.

Pretty sure it is 125,000 on that year. Mine was 100,000.

The service receipt books are rubbish, no indication of what was actually done.
I had mine done at 120,000 as I couldn't be sure they had done it.

They had but it was about to go as the tensioner hadn't been changed and was failing.

Get the water pump changed at the same time!

I've had another look at the service schedule form that has been filled in at every service, and the confusion results from the fact that these forms seem to change every year.

Anyways, for timing belts on HDi models, the majority seem to say this (this is a form for C4, C5 and C6 models):

C6 V6 HDi, 1.6 and 2.0 HDi every 150,000/160,000 miles or ten years
2.2HDi 138hp every 100,000 miles or 10 years
2.2 HDi 173hp every 160,000 miles or 10 years

So I'm guessing the first line applies to me. The 150k miles presumably refers to the 1.6 because it has 12.5k service intervals, whilst the 2.0 and the V6 have 20k intervals, so are presumably the ones that need a belt change at 160k.

One thing I did notice was that my upcoming 120k service seems to be the one at which the FAP is changed, a hefty cost indeed - good job I had it done six months ago whilst it was in having the EOLYS topped up, spreads the cost a little!

Still, 160k seems an awful long time for a belt change - I wonder, if it snaps before then and wrecks the engine, then would Citroen meet the costs of repair on an out-of-warranty car, but one which had a full main dealer service history?

No, older 2.0HDis, the 90 and 110 bhps are every 100K or 10 years.

It will be the newer 2.0 136bhp that is 150/ten years. Mind thats an awful long time, id have mine changed much sooner than that.

My last car was 40K or 4 years! I thought that was a bit short but 150K! Thats way too long in my opinion.

Its better to over service and replace things early than to leave it till its too late.

Likewise i would never leave a car with the same oil for 20K miles. My C5 is on 12.5K services, but it gets done every 6K.

Mate at work has just done a partial head rebuild on an '06 306.
Belt snapped at 60,000 miles. 2 new valves, new cam caps, 3 new valve guides and a drive sprocket that was 1/3 missing.
Not cheap!
