No, but I can see the appeal in doing so. I'm always very jealous of 406 owners for that reason....

I never realised that 406's had them?!

And there was me thinking that the Xantia had the upper hand with regards to technology...

So there we have a PSA irony, on the one hand we have a car with a hydraulic/gas suspension system that has a single rod stay, while on the other hand we have a car with a more primitive suspension, that they saw fit to equip with a pair of struts to lift the bonnet.

Should be an easy job to do, its only a matter of fixing the mounting points to the bonnet and inner wing with a spot of weld or bolting.
Then you can all enjoy easy access 8)

and the big bill when the gas struts go limp and the bonnet falls on you

The way an Xantia support is at the back, and out of the way means it does not make access that difficult.

So, although it could be tempting to adapt it, and do this, compare it to a stay which gets in the way more, mounted on the front slam panel, or a front hinged bonnet  I.E. BMW, Renault Kangoo style.

Can you flip a 406 bonnet past the vertical, though? That's one of the Xantia's greatest assets IMO.

I have not tried that, how far do the hinges let it go?

Does it go far enough to rest on the body with padding to protect the panels?

I have not tried Series I, but the SII has inbuilt hinge stops that hold it about 10° past vertical. No padding required, but a simple restraint is good practice.

Great for inspecting your steering rack or exhaust fanimold.

Hi addo

Edit......

Well now with the benefit of hindsight the latter can't be done, as it should not be able to go that far.

If it had been in the morning as it was for you when you posted, I would have gone out, and checked it on my S2.

The fact that it opens like that sounds very useful.

I am aware of Mercedes doing this, as when the bonnet is open normally on their cars, the grill which goes up with it gets in the way as it hangs down as an L-shape, and I have seen an owner bang his head, who was not aware that it will open more, most of their models will open to a useful 90 degrees.

So I'm off out now to look at my "fanimold!"

Good that you've found one extra useful "quirk" on your car.

Well good evening & many thanks to you for that information addo, 8) and owning an Xantia Activa I enjoy finding out its quirky traits, as long as they don't leave me in "Dire Straits"

Some might say that getting car that has spheres is "Money For Nothing" but I enjoy the fun of a great car, and see that others are missing the spherical point!

Also with having an Activa I notice that others are when they corner, the "Sultans Of Swing!"

So now I'm off to see my Activa's "Latest Trick." 8)

Doing some "Private Investigations" then? Will it be a "Romeo & Juliette" romance? Is it Love Over Gold?

Were it still April 1st, I'd suggest the prototype Xantia had hydraulically operated bonnet struts. :P

The prop rod suits me fine, save when a mate tries to close the bonnet without realising it's comparatively incompressible.
