Have you checked your oil? If the head gasket has gone you might find it in there.

Failing that it could be the heater matrix and it is all in the fromt footwell, under the carpets. Is there a coolant smell in the car?

the oil appears to be ok, its not using any more than usual either, nor is there any emulsion in the cap

nope, been going like the clappers, starts with no trouble, idles nicely, pulls cleanly from 1200-1300revs through to 3000revs(when i change up), temp runs normal for a couple of days(even in heavy traffic), then boom, the temp goes through the roof

Bit of a stumper.
Have you run it for a while stationary and checked for leaks?

It may be the radiator cap is opening at a lower pressure than it should and dumping the coolant, you would only see this once the car was heated up fully.

Have you popped the bonnet after a run and checked for water/steam escaping?

Are the fans operating as they should?

Hopefully wiser heads than mine will look in and offer some more useful advice.

cant see any evidence of water escaping from the cap, the fan cuts out as soon as the engine is switched off, no matter what temp the engine is running, thanx for having a crack at an answer.

If you can, get hold of a pressure tester, when you pressurize the system the leak will show itself.

its coming from the pulley side of the engine, probably the water pump, anyone know how tricky they are to replace?

It's a big job (if you consider a cambelt a big job), need to remove the cambelt IIRC, so best to replace that at the same time, most replace the water pump when they do the cam belt as a matter of course.
